Can colon cancer be detected on a fecal occult blood test?

k before i even start ill go over my symptoms. its going to sound gross but when i go number 2 i get a stool out then i feel the urge to go again yet i cant something stops me like my stomach. lately my stools have been black but i think thats because ive been takin pepto bismol. i have been having pain in my left and right lower abdominal area its an aching pain that comes and goes i want to be calm about this but should i go to the doctor i am only 18 and no family history of colo cancer at a young age could the aches and pains just be muscle?

my uncle said also that alot of stuff causes his stool to go black so maybe its the pepto i dunno i had blood tests done a while back and everything came back normal

The only thing a fecal occult blood test can do is detect blood in your stool which is a symptom of many things, colon cancer being only one of them. I don鈥檛 know if Pepto Bismol can make your stools black or not, but it is a sign of bleeding from your GI tract. Not being able to completely empty your bowels is another sign of colon cancer. All of this being said, most people with colon cancer do not have pain in both sides of their abdomen and it is very rare for someone you age to have colon cancer. However, something is clearly wrong and you should see a doctor, preferably a gastroenterologist. There are several things it could be and some of those if left untreated could leave you with lifelong gastric problems and at a higher risk for cancer later in life. I hope you feel better soon.

a fecal occult blood test only checks for the presents of blood which is a sign of colon cancer, but could also be a sighn of something else. It sound like all the pepto is causeing you to be constapated which is causing the crampy pain in your abdomen. Try taking a laxative. If you continue to have problems with you bowels then I would suggest seeing a doctor to rule out anything such as irrtable bowl syndrome.

That test is the start. If it shows something worth looking at, you might have to get a colonoscopy (camera up the wazoo).

Dark stool can be a sign of blood in your intestines.

HELL YES GO TO THE DOC!
