Anyone here ever or have colon cancer ?

if so how well did you over come the sugery and the chemo and radiation treatmentsor anyone you who has

Hi, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 colon cancer at age 47.

I had a colon resection in which they removed 23 inches of colon. Initally, they told me that I would be in the hospital 5 - 9 days. I went home in 4 days. When you go home, you are in a little pain, but nothing that is unbearable. You will have a bit of diarrhea for the first few days following the resection. That will resolve itself

I did chemotherapy (5-Fu & Leukovoran) for 16 months. (46 treatments) I did not loose the hair on my head but lost all my body hair. Everyone's body responds to chemo differently. I had diarrhea which was controlled with medication. There are wonderful anti nausea drugs which are given before your chemo. They really worked for me. My appetite was a little off the first 2 days but after that I could eat most foods with no problem. In fact, I even gained 5 pounds.

I also surrounded myself with positive people. I have a pin that I wore while I was sick. It says, "Attitude is everything, So pick a good one." It reminded me to approach what I was faced with, with a fighting attitude. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't all a breeze. There were some tough days. But, there were more great days than bad.

I wish you the best of luck and a fierce determination to fight this.

I will pray for your strength.
i have an aunt that does. SHe's starting chemo soon and is haveing her rectum hole closed and opening a whole in his intestine to have the s hit come out throgh there called a colostomy
My mom had colon cancer and she was really sick. She died from it but were talking over 20 years ago. Today the medications are much better than what they had so good luck.
Ten years ago my mother had it. She was not diagnosed early and her surgery was merely palliative. She was only given 6 months or less to live. She took several experimental drugs at CTRC in San Antonio, Texas. The doctors and nurses were all very helpful and nice. She was in remission for awhile, but did not live quite two years from her surgery. The chemo made her very tired. Especially the day after. She had a colostomy and had to take amodium for diarrhea. Nausea and pain were also factors we dealt with. She never had radiation. Since that time more progress has been made and treatments have improved. As everyone is a bit different their reactions could be and usually do vary. A positive attitude and strong will to survive will go a long way on your road to recovery.
