do you know if the life expectancy is high or low? For a Stage IV CRC the prognosis is very poor, and treatment is usually palliative. A stage IV tumour has penetrated the bowel wall and spread to adjacent organs. However other factor must be considered, such as nodal involvement, and metastatic spread. If it means anything to you the 5 year survival is only 8% for an untreated stage IV tumour. I know this is quite scientific, but it is impotant to remember every case is different. The fact that doctors are attempting a colostomy is very positive, and your friends prognosis will depend on the outcome of this surgery. If there is no metastatic spread this operation could cure his cancer. In my opinion it is best to wait til after surgery and speak to the surgeon. Stage 4 cancer is not good. The colostomy report should be able to tell you for sure how advanced everything is. Everyone is different so it is impossible to tell you how "long" a person has. My dad was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in sept. 2006. They told him he has only 8 months to live. Well over a year later he is doing great.
