Bush Administration Tries to Redefine Contraception as Abortion?

The New York Times reports that the Bush Administration鈥檚 Department of Health and Human Services is drafting a rule that would place new restrictions on domestic family planning programs. While current law allows health care providers and professionals to refuse to provide abortions based on their religious beliefs, this provision would threaten the funding of organizations and health facilities if they do not hire people who would refuse to provide birth control and defines abortion so broadly that it would include many types of birth control, including oral contraception.

Speaker Pelosi released the following statement on the Administration鈥檚 draft proposal:

If the Administration goes through with this draft proposal, it will launch a dangerous assault on women鈥檚 health.

The majority of Americans oppose this out of touch position that redefines contraception as abortion and represents a sustained pattern of the Bush Administration to reject medical and sound science in favor of a misguided ideology that has no place in our government.

I urge the President to reject this policy and join with Democrats to focus on preventing unintended pregnancies and reducing the need for abortion through increasing access to family planning services and access to affordable birth control.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THIS????????????

I think it's nuts how people always want to tell others what to do. Why limit contraceptives? So we can double the population by 2010 instead of 2025? If a woman decides she is not fit to be a mother and would rather give an already existing child the shot at a good home (as opposed to her newborn) why do people care?! Probably the same people who don't want children taught about what to do when sex does become a part of their lives (which it will no matter how much they don't want it to!) Why not focus instead on the living breathing children (and adults) of the world who already desperately need parents and assistance instead of getting bent about the ones who never will??
Funny what people's priorities are.

It will NEVER go through because contraceptives are used for many legitimate health reasons other than birth control. Regardless of how hard Bush tries to get contraceptives banned, it will never happen. Contraceptives are used for things like ovarian cysts, heavy bleeding, painful periods, irregular periods and more. Things like ovarian cysts and heavy bleeding can be life threatening to a woman and will not be banned. So don't even give this another thought.

Obama, Bush or McCain, we shouldn't be killing babies. However strong my opinion is on abortion, I do not think preventing pregnancy with birth control is a form of abortion. How can you kill a baby that never existed. I wouldn't automatically assume this is the whole nature of the bill. It could be only bits and pieces.

I think there is NO way this will be passed and thank god he is almost out of office!

See, they start with making abortion illegal and then they move on to contraception. People just are not aware of how quickly giving one right up can lead to giving up others.

Wake up America!

I was skeptical after the first four words: "The New York Times". They're about as reliable a source of unbiased information as a car salesman.

Shouldnt this be in the Politics section?

This will never happen. 80% or more of America uses birth control. This will never be passed.

Just one more reason to vote for Obama and count the days until Bush is out of office.

No birth control means more abortions. I don't get why they don't realize this.

Bush is a dick and needs to think before he acts! I feel like he doesn't care about women whatsoever!

wait i do not understand this, are they refusing abortions???

I couldn't get your link to work. Do you have another link/source? I went to the New York Time's website and couldn't find the report you are referring to.

The link you posted looks more like someone's blog, talking about an opinion rather than giving factual based reporting. I'd hesitate to put any stock into what that blog has to say.

EDIT*...LOL - the huffington post? You've got to be kidding. They are no credible source of fact. They write some interesting pieces but are considered EXTREMELY liberal in their opinions. So it doesn't surprise me that they would put an alarmist spin on anything GOP related.
