Does taking anti biotics effect your contraception implant (implanon)? |
i have a implant in my arm and am not ready for children but iv been given anti biotics by my dentist and i dont want to take them incase it effects my implant and i fall pregnant. i know that anti biotics effect the pill. No, you're completely OK, it doesn't affect your implant. The reason for this is that the drug in the implant is absorbed a completely different way to the pill. If you take a pill orally as well as the antibiotic, because the antibiotic can speed up the motility of the gut (the speed at which food etc passes through) and cause diarrhoea, the pill is not staying in the intestine long enough to be absorbed into the blood stream and hence travel to the ovaries to do its job. The antibiotics are going through the digestive system and your implant is slowing releasing the drug directly into the blood stream in your arm, with no need to go through the digestive tract at all. |
