A Question about depression.... Does these symptoms sound like depression 2 u?

I know someone who *the doctor says* suffers from depression. His symptoms include the following:

He gets angry quickly and then Throughs things and hits himself repetedly on the head with his hands.
He looks like he gets fits where his whole body stiffens (Not Epilepsy) He gets muscle spasms, which only gets worse when he gets angry.
He gets the same above mentioned symptoms when he eats! He gets physically Sick after he eats, like he has a hole in his stomach. Or as he discribes it like he has swallowed a Huge Rock.

Now does this sound like Depression 2 u? It doesn't sound that way 2 me! He has been 2 alot of doctors with the same problem and they all say Depression, but antidepressants makes him even worse. I get scared 2 be around him when he gets like that.

Please help, have you ever heard of this kind of depression?

rhamm618, the medication was given 2 him by a GP, Who phoned a psyciatrist and asked which medication should be given 2 him.

there is a possibility it could be. there is such a disorder called a agitated depression, which can have similar symptoms this person is showing. first this person should have a complete physical, including blood work ,and have their thyroid function checked out. if the thyroid gland is not working properly, it can cause agitation also. also, i hope this person is seeing psychiatrist, not a g p. a psychiatrist is better to diagnose this problem. a short stay at a psychiatric hospital may be helpfull so they can observe his behaviour and gain more insight as how to treat this person. hope this helps. sometimes it takes a while to diagnose and treat mental illness, and see what medications a person responds best too. below is a link.

I think it sounds a lot more like anxiety to me. He needs to be seen by a phsychiatrist and a therapist rather than a GP. Psychiatrists do not have that "stima" they used to have and really, no one needs to know that he is seeing one, but I am afaid it will only get worse if gone on untreated. Please keep in mind that it takes up to three weeks for most antidepressants and antianxiety meds to reach their full potential. I hope he is okay.

Definitely dosen't sound like depression to me! Must be very frightening for you and for him. I think he needs some serious medical help.

I have Depression ( severely), OCD, Bi-Polar, Anxiety, and Autism ( mild Form). None of this would cause this reaction. I have been in the hospital and around others will various mental illnesses similiar to mine, and I've not see this type of behavior out of them.
i am inclined though to think it could be an extreme case of Bi-Polar coupled with anxiety.
It could very well be an extreme case of Autism.
However, I am more inclined to discount all of the above and accept the fact it is something different.

I would suggest to you not to play doctor, I did this and my doctor ( shrink) really got angry because i was asking about disorders I read about. So don't go that way at all.
I would ask the Shrink why he feels it is depression, or why he feels it is this or that. I would further do one better, I'd get a video tape of your friend during an episode so the doctor can see it himselr - then ask does this appear like depression to you??
I'd say there is anxiety in there..that could be the trigger, and often anxiety comes in a package that you cannot wrap other than the way it comes. So if you have anxiety then you automatically have depression - anxiety comes in the package for depression.
I just can't see either of these alone or together causing this reaction.
I it is really time for a sitdown, we drop our hats at the door, and speak frankly to the doctor and ask questions so we get the answers we seek. Once we have the information, and the doctor can see what behavior you're talking about then we can make valid decisions on treatment and medicatrion.
Your friend might do very well to sign himself into the hospital psych ward for 10 days or so ..just so they can study his behavior and observe it first hand. Then it would be a team of different disciplines at his disposal rather than one or two.
In the least, they'll adjust his medication.

BTW If this is a change in behavior that had not been seen in the past. For example, started this January and was not seen last summer or even at Christmas Time. Then it could very well be medication related - even if there was no change in the meds our body does change over time. Sometimes what worked before appearantly stops working and we must adjust our medications to meet the new needs.
