Are anxiety and depression closely linked?

why might that be?

They are very closely linked.

Often, people start anxious, and as a result of an inability to cope with the anxiety properly, they develop depression.

For example, a person with social anxiety may eventually develop depression, due to a lack of social interaction and telling themself they are worthless and socially inapt.

Well, a lot of people have anxiety disorders such as Generalized Anxiety Disorder or Social Anxiety Disorder. It often prevents them from doing the things they want to do, and they get depressed because of it.

For example, John Doe gets anxious around his peers, like at school. John is afraid to talk to anyone because he has unrealistic feelings that they are judging him and noticing him out from everyone else. As a result, its much harder for John to make friends. John becomes depressed when he can't live up to his expectations, and feels depressed because of it. He wants good friends, but he doesn't feel confident enough to put himself out there.

Many anxiety disorders will work in a similar fashion, attacking an aspect of a persons life and leaving them feeling as if they have no control.

yes, for me anxiety lead to depression, I didn't understand why I was so anxious and having panic attacks and it made me hibernate in my house I didn't want to go anywhere, do anything, I had no motivation whatsoever and I cried a lot b/c I was so frustrated.
