Some people use the term depression when they are really sad. Clinical depression usually means one has been diagnosed with Major Depression.

In some cases the terms are used interchangably by people, however, clinical depression is not actually in the DSM-IV-TR -- the "bible," so to speak, that is used for diagnosing. The DSM lists Depressive Disorders and then lists "Major Depression" which is broken down as "recurrent" or "single episode," "Dysthymic Disorder" (which is depression -- in adults for 2 years without a major depressive episode and some other defining characteristics,) and "Depressive Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified." So, the term clinical depression is technically just a phrase used by non-professionals to distinguish between "real" (i.e. those diagnosed with) depression and those who are really sad (or depressed.)

No difference at all --- "clinical" means you've seen a psychiatrist and/or medical professional and been diagnosed with depression.

Many people will say they are in a state of depression because they're sad. Sorry, not so. Depression is caused by an imbalance of chemicals in the brain and must be treated by antidepressants. Some people will only require a short period of treatment with these medications; others, however, will need these medications for the rest of their lives.

Depression is also a hereditary disease -- check your family history. Many women get postpartum depression. Others may well get depression following a traumatic event in their lives -- the loss of a loved one; loss of employment for an extended amount of time; being separated from your loved ones and being lonely will cause it; so many various causes I could go on and on. Depression is not something to take lightly and it is not something to be ashamed of, either. Anyone feeling he/she may have depression should seek help as soon as possible.

Everyone suffers some form of depression during their lives, typically during the loss of a loved one through death or separation. Even the ups and downs of normal life can have times that make a person sad or depressed. This type of depression only happens periodically, depending on life's circumstances. Clinical depression, on the other-hand, is a more constant state of sadness. With this type of depression the person feels helpless and hopeless. and unable to manage activities of daily life (ADL).

Depression is just a mood that can be easily overcome. Clinical depression is much harder to overcome. it's a chemical imbalance in the brain.

Depression is a mood state. Clinical depression is when it's a severe and/or persisting problem, that's impacting your life.

Clinical depression is a more serious thing that needs treatments, and depression is just like a feeling or a mood.

one can probably be resolved with out medication by changing your daily routine the other needs meds to help balance the chemicals in your brain
