Is NON-chronic depression considered a severe mental illness.?

I do not think so, is this correct? I mean depression that goes away in a couple of months. You get treated for it and you are fine.

Severity of depression isn't measured by how long it lasts but by how much it effects the person's ability to function.

For example, a person can have chronic depression, but if it is NOT severe they can get out of bed every day, hold down a job, and can even feel at least "okay" with their life.

However, a person who has a severe depressive episode (which can come on after a traumatic event to a person who has not previously been identified with a depressive disorder) can end up not getting out of bed, going to work, talking to anyone, and worst of all - have suicidal thoughts, attempts, and even a death by suicide.

If it's a single episode, then no, it's not considered a severe MI. Of course, if it included psychosis and hospitalization, that'd be a little different even if it'd only happened once so far.

Nope. That's in the category of "Mild to Moderate" Depression. It is considered a depressive episode, rather than a chronic disease.
