My mom won't do anything about my depression?

I've told her and everything what I go through.
But she won't do anything
She say's my dad doesn't want me on meds either.
WHY?!
I need it.
I freak out at little things and worry.
Then she asks me why I do that.
It's driving me crazy, and right now
My stomach hurts because all this.
:(
What should I do?

Daniel,
Believe it or not, most everyone goes through years of thinking like you when they are moving into adulthood, even if they don't admit it to themselves.

Medicines solve the problem in the short term, but they erase the need for you to mature and evolve on your own. You'll find yourself at 30 being immature and poorly balanced. It will affect your work life, your relationships, and your happiness in far worse ways than simply enduring life's crap right now.

Instead of trying to get yourself medicated, there are a zillion ways to work towards being a happier person. It all requires action on your part, but you'll be MUCH happier than if you take drugs. Why is this true? Because drugs don't make you happy. They numb you to unhappiness so that you don't take action to solve those things that make you unhappy. If you solve the issues and work towards being a happy person without meds, you'll be truly happy instead of medicated-but-not-unhappy.

Please get yourself on a "road to self discovery". Do these things:
1. If there are people in your life that are making you unhappy, distance yourself from them if possible. If not possible, figure out why they make you unhappy and fix it in your mind. If they push you - push back. For example - some people lay guilt trips on others. Don't let someone lay one on you if you aren't part of the problem.
2. Exercise. It needs to be an activity you like, or you'll get bored and won't do it, but it helps alot more than you think because it changes your body and brain chemistry.
3. Read certain books that will help, like "The Road Less Travelled" by Dr. M. Scott Peck. He explains things that will allow you to clear your mind of clutter, like guilt that isn't yours, negative self images, and stuff like that.
4. Find a creative outlet that lets you relax and do something you enjoy. A musical instrument, painting, weaving, sewing, sculpting, ballet, whatever.
5. Don't concentrate on stuff that makes you miserable.

Good luck

Kevin

If she wont allow you medication, suggest that you at least be allowed to see a therapist. In my experience, if a therapist really believes you should be medicated, he/she will have a meeting with your parents and suggest you see a psychiatrist who may prescribe meds.

By asking to see a therapist you initially escape the hassle of your parents disliking the concept of meds.

If your parents wont let you see a therapist, see the school therapist. If you're deemed too unstable it will become a case of neglect on your parents part to leave you untreated.

Talk to a school counselor. It's their job to help kids like you. If your parents won't listen, call your doctor yourself. He/She probably won't prescribe meds without your parent's permission, but that may be enough to get the ball rolling. You may not need meds, maybe just talk therapy.

Many parents don't want to admit their child may have a problem. Many kids are too scared to ask for help. If your plea for help is falling on deaf ears, please keep asking! All I can say is that many teens go through this- all the emotions, expectations and demands can be overwhelming. I think adults either forget what it was like or believe "it's just a phase".

Don't think that meds are a cure. Not enough studies have been done on anti-depressants and teens. I can understand why your folks are hesitant. This may sound scary, but sit down with your parents and explain that you are really worried about this. Don't blame them for not taking you seriously because that will only make them defensive. Hopefully, they will surprise you and be open to getting help. There's too many parents who didn't listen and now their child is gone...

Belive in yourself and you will prevail! I was sure I wouldn't live to see my 20th birthday, but with help from friends and family, I'm still standing.

If you can't get the help you need through your parents try talking to an adult you trust...a friends parents, school principle, counsler, or a teacher. And if you dont' get help from them call the police (especially if you are feeling suicidal) or have someone (or take yourself) take you to the emergency room at a local hospital and tell them everything. They will get you the help you need.

Good Luck

First of all how old are you? Can you make your own dr appointments?? You can always call the depression hotline to talk to someone, and maybe they could talk to your parents about it so they can take you to a doctor. Depression is considered a serious disease and there are many "safe" medication to take that will help you.

it is all socalogical. Yo have control over your thoughts. It's your brain, isn't it? Meds might help, but only he short term. For the long term, you just have to take setps to get over it. Again, i say i is all in your head. If you firmly believe you have depression, you will be depressed. Personally, being religious helps me stay joyful.

Go to a school counselor or another relative.. my stepdad was like that too. I told him I was suicidal and he laughed. Some people just dont get it so you have to go to the ones that will take you seriously and understand.
Good luck :)

the reason mite be is she mite not acept the reason or idea that u have a problem
if they wont help
ask another relativ or friend that can help and is willing

fyi
always look at the brightside of things
hope this helps
wish u best of luck

Meds, especially anti-depressants, might make it worse.

Well, Im a very happy person, so I couldn't help you. Sorry pal.
