Postpartum depression and disability?

I have severe postpartum depression and I am wondering if it is possible to collect disability for it in PA. I can barely function and Im worried about not having an income. Thanks.

PPD is not a disbility because it is treatable with medication and it is due to hormone inbalnce adn sleep depriviation thus it is not considered a chronic form of depression that allows you to collect SSI. Talk to your docotr to get the help you need adn enlist family members to help you out. It is overwhemling when you have to deal with a lot of stuff and it gets in yoru way of functioning but don't feel so alone adn helpless- iwas in your shoes adn got help and now i am much better. There are no superheroes-you are human adn have limitations and one of them is SLEEP-you can;t function without it adn having this pressure of doing it all adn be "the best" cause things to get out of hands. You have nothing to balme yourself about your feeling and shoudl not feel guilty because it is a PROVEN FACT that it is due to hormone imbalance and chemical inbalance in the brain after the pregnancy and delivery. Good luck!

If you were working prior to your giving birth, you could probably have a psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker update your state disability file with a focus on how severely you are disabled in functioning in your daily life: Taking care of yourself; not being able to cook, clean, interact with others; social isolation & withdrawal; impaired concentration & attention span; slowed reactions; thoughts of worthlessness, depression; anxiety; feeling like you're not a good mother; etc. A list of medications you are taking.

Otherwise, you'd have to apply for Social Security Disability which can take a long time. Talk to your psychiatrist about it.
Look in your local yellow pages for legal agencies that provide services re: disability cases...you can probably find one that you don't have to pay for...even try services for the elderly. CCall the social work dept of the hospital you delivered your baby in. They may be able to help.

My best to you....this is not forever!!

Your doctor is the place to start. S/he should be somewhat familiar with the process or be able to refer you to those who do know it. S/he will also have to fill out paper work for you, so discussing it with her/him is appropriate all ways round.

You should be able to get it. But it's very hard. If they deny you, fight your case in court.
