Does anyone here know anything about melancholic depression or have dealt with it?

My 63 year old Mom is going through a severe depression and shows all signs of melancholic depression. I was wondering if anyone had any dealings with this and how can I help her? She is and outpatient at the hospital and is on Zoloft and Klonodin. For now I tell her everyday I believe in her and know I she can work on herself and that there's no easy way out but hard work, just like everything in life. Is this the right thing to do? Thanks for your help!

Melancholic depressions and bipolar depressions are believed to be mostly biological in nature. They tend to be severe and come on for no apparent reason. They are also the most responsive to somatic treatments (medications, ECT). You are doing the best thing by being there for her, supporting her and encouraging her. But be aware that she may not respond to the first antidepressant that she tries. There are different classes of antidepressants and several different types in each class. Hopefully she'll respond to the treatment she is getting now but if she doesn't don't give up hope.
