Trying to help a friend with depression..?

Im worried about my friend. Im currently living in a different state to him, so i dont get to talk to him as much as id like to - mainly because he wont answer my calls. But i finally got on to him last night, and he said that he hasnt been answering cos he just doesnt feel like talking anymore. to anyone. he said hes "struggling to do most things in his life, let alone have any sort of emotion". he said hes feeling "emotionally drained at the moment.. hes just exhausted and wants to sleep for a year" "ive forgotten how to be interested anymore".

Its happening because he has some friends who are dealing with depression, and they are all turning to him for advice. But they just keep getting worse each day.. but now IM worried for him, that he is going to end up with depression too if he isnt careful. What do i do? How do i keep him from getting it himself, without telling him to give up on his friends? They are all boys, so they are very against seeking help from professionals.

The only way you can help anyone with depression is by not trying to help....Honestly, depression is medical issue not a personality flaw or character judgement. There is nothing you can do.....I really hate when friends or family tell me to snap out of it or try to drag me out when I am having an episode. Its not something that can be "fixed', most of all please dont try to help us.....let the meds run the course ect ect...Let the doctors and meds work....no you....

If you friends is against seeing professionals then that is their problem not yours...they are missing out on being healthy...that is the crazy part.

he should crawl in a hole and hate every body forever that wat i did and im only 15 i started wen i was 12

forget about it. drink more, worry less.

Depression isn't like a virus that you can "catch" from someone. It is an inherit and individual illness that should be uniquely discussed and dealt with.

He may be exhausted from trying to constantly uplift his other friends who are depressed and from being around them, he is emotionally drained.

I would suggest maybe telling him to be helpful for his friends but not to allow the emotional drain to affect his life where it is interfering with things.

Many people find themselves exhausted, frustrated, and drained when trying to help people with depression...unfortunately it's the nature of the illness.

Depression is not something that you can catch, it's a genetic condition that some people live with. Someone may have the predisposition to depression but typically live a stress-free happy life, then there might be someone else who suffers a life altering or traumatizing event that can bring the depressive gene to the surface.
I live with depression and it took a traumatic event to bring it to the surface, but now I've learned to live with it.
As for your friend, he has to make his own choices, but if I were you, I'd tell him that you are there for him whenever he feels he needs a shoulder or a friend. I'd also be upfront with him and tell him that you see warning signs that concern you, that you want him to be careful and to look out for himself. Best of luck to the two of you.
