Do I have post partum depression and if so where can I get free help?

I had a beautiful baby girl on March 3, 2008. I love her more than anything in the world but here lately I have felt really depressed. I cry all the time, snap at my husband for the smallest things, and isolate myself from everyone around me. I don't sleep much and last night I actually thought about cutting myself but I didn't act on the thought. Is this what post partum depression is and if so where can I go for help that doesn't cost a whole lot of money? Or what can I do? I have no support system because my closest relatives live miles away.

It sounds like post partum depression, but I am not a therapist and cannot make that diagnosis. Call your primary care physician or OBGYN and talk to him/her first. They can make a referral to a counselor -- tell them you need low cost. There are usually state/county agencies that do sliding scales and accept insurance as well (if you have insurance that has mental health benefits.) In addition, remember family doesn't have to be your only support system -- you can reach out to friends, neighbors, work associates and others if you or your husband have any of these for support.

Good luck.

hmmm im not sure if it would intertest you in any way but there are websites that are supporting out there with forums and chatrooms. One I help with is http://forums.talkcity.com/tc-depression... which you can talk about how you feel and speak with others in the same position. It doesnt mean you shoudlnt seek professional help you should but tis an option for between things

It does sounds as if you have post partum depression but it would take a Counselor to make this diagnosis. Sometimes this can become very severe so I think your best move would be to contact someone. Even though it can be expensive in the long run it would be worth it. You might try going to a regular physician but all he will do is give you some type of antidepressant. This would be better than doing nothing. I would suggest looking in the phone book and finding a licensed professional counselor. Many will see people on a sliding scale due to financial problems. Make sure you ask when you call them and if they don't they could refer you to someone who does or possibly some State agency that offers counseling. If they feel you need medication they can refer you to a physician. A Counselor will be less expensive than a Psychiatrist or a Psychologist.

The fact you have thought about cutting yourself suggest you need immediate help. Let me know if this was helpful.
