What should I take for depression/anxiety?

I had a miscarriage in April. Right after this happened I went to the doctor for my depression and anxiety. I knew I had this before I got pregnant and I feel like my worrying and stress was to hard on the baby. So before I try to have another one I want to get this under control. My doctor started me out on paxil and hydroyzine. They made me feel like I was drunk and completely out of it. So I stopped cold turkey. About a week after I stop I had horrible depression and really bad anxiety. So I called the doctor and asked to be perscribed to something else so she perscribed me to buspar. Buspar made me sooo sick to my stomach so I stopped it too. So needless to say I am going back to the doctor today. I need something that wont make me sleepy and will help me get to my normal self. Any suggestions?

Abilify has been the best for me. But I have had severe depression for years - so your doctor may be hesitatnt to start that with you - he/she may go with more conventional meds. Wellbuterin SR may help. Effexor or Luvox. Stick with it for at least 3 weeks - the side effects usually go away and then the real effect is noticeable.

I used to try something then experience side effect after a few days then quit. I have learned to stick it out for awhile. Plus not good to stop and start too many things in a short period of time. And it is not good to go cold turkey - but rather decrease the dosage until stopped. (unless life threatening reaction)

Klonopin too -but that may cause sleepiness. Unfortunately, most anti-anxiety agents cause sleepiness.

Maybe Zoloft.

I was severely depressed for years and have been on Paxil, Depakote, Prozac and Zoloft. Out of the 4 of them, Zoloft seemed to work the best (at least for me).

Zoloft is an antidepressant in a group of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Zoloft affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression, panic, anxiety, or obsessive-compulsive symptoms.

Zoloft is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

Any medication is going to have side-affects... you should be spending your money on counseling or therapy. Sometimes a natural approach is much better in the long run.
I understand that it would be very hard for you to go without medication, as depression and anxiety are very debilitating. I understand.. really.
I have no idea what kind of medication the medical world offers for these kinds of things.
If you're religious, try some of that. It usually helps a lot.

go to your natural foods store and pick up some VALERIAN herb. you can get it in capsule, tincture, or herb form.

i have been on many different prescriptions including buspar, and since i have stopped them all together for the past few years, valerian has taken it's place fully. it is the best way to calm down and it won't MAKE you go to sleep, but it will for sure drift you off into another land and help you get to sleep. and will give you beautiful vivid dreams as well. please try this!!

A lot of anti depression medications have side effects in the beginning. If they make you nauseous take them with bread. If they make you sleepy take them at bedtime. The side effects usually go away within two weeks. I take buspar, depakote and welbutrin. These are anti depression, anti anxiety and ocd meds. It took about a year to figure out the right combination but I feel great now. Good luck to you.

- Friends support, that's a very very good way without negative side effect. talk to them, chat with them, go for a walk with them.

- Sunlight, get more sunshine (not direct, but just some outdoor activities)

- Prepare something that can distract you when u're in blue, such as some good happy songs, photos, cook books, etc.

- Jokes..... u need something that can make u laugh, search on web or watch some funny video at youtube

- pets, yea, they so cute and can keep u busy (or you can watch some pet's video at youtube too)

- Travel, go somewhere that can refresh yourself.

Bottomline, the best 2 weapons u can use is "Friends" and "Distraction". I wish you all the best for your next baby. good luck :)

1. NEVER take any advice on here unless you talk to your doctor first. We're all "quacks" with our two cents worth.
2. I take Lexapro and Clonidine for anxiety, works great for ME...might not for anyone else.
Take care, and I hope you're well soon....

Lexapro

Very minimal side effects

I tried Paxil first too and it made me sick. Lexapro has never made me sick.

Laughter is the only medicine not any drug sweetheart.

The best thing is going to be paxil. Be careful huge appetite increase though.

It truly depends on each individual. My husband has had about every anti depressant out there. Each person's body chemistry is different and the amount of serotonin, uptake inhibitors, and dopamine are also very different amongst individuals. Therefore it makes it hard to say which medicine or combination of medicines will be the best for you. Your psychiatrist is the only one who can tell you. Unfortunately, they play a hit and miss game trying to determine the best.

Zoloft is a good one that really has not side effects of any notability and does help take the edge off. When my husband began going through his depression, eventually he stress of it made me need to have something to ease the stress. So I began taking Zoloft. It works great for me and for many others who I know take it. But you don't feel loopy or out of it!!!!! Hope this helps you.

On another front, there are many natural remedies that a good herbalist can help you find the best for you. One of the gals mentioned Valerian root. this is the derivative of Valium. It does calm, but even with natural remedies I think you should search for a professional in holistic medicine before you just begin taking them.
Finding an outlet that focuses on helping others is also good once you get something that helps you to calm down. By helping others we really take our minds off of ourselves, and we begin feeling better.

My doctor recommended Effexor XR for the depression/anxiety and said it's okay to take while pregnant. But please understand that it seems like you're starting off a too high of a dose, which is why you are having these symptoms. You need to start of slower (the reason why doctors tell you not to start so slowly is because they want to get you "better" as quickly as possible, and starting at smaller doses will take longer).

So on Effexor XR, my doctor wanted me on 3 pills of 37.5 mg, and I started at 1/4 pill for a week, then 1/2 pill a week, to 1 pill a week, and so on (I had to open the capsules and pour it out - cause it's not pills you break).

Oh dear! I am sorry to hear of what happened to you.

I've been on Lexapro for anxiety and it had very little side effects on me. And I am currently on Prozac and it hasn't had many side effects, either. It doesn't make me sleepy but it does make it a lot easier to go to sleep--if that makes any sense. And I think the Prozac made me lose my appetite a little bit, too. None of my medication has ever made me sick, though. And I agree with what the other person said--don't take this advice very seriously. Consult your doctor, hun. Good luck with what you're battling. I hope everything works out for you. :)
