Can serious depression in a child be treated within months with no medication? |
My cousin and I are both 20 and I feel like she always gets pity just because she was apparently suicidal when she was 8. I personally don't believe it. Apparently she had violent "visions" but to me, it sounds more like just nightmares or weird thoughts. Here's why: during this phase of "serious depression" she went to a therapist a few times a week for a few months and ended up totally fine! she didnt even go on medication of any sort. I just don't believe that clinical depression can be "fixed" that quickly. is there something I'm missing? Maybe was she sick with another mental disorder? It could have been situational depression and it could have been due to a lot of things, including that she wasn't getting enough attention. That does happen. It could have been due to something that she hasn't shared with you. It also could be due to something else, but a brief depression and stint in therapy at eight does not make for a mental disorder. What's hard to understand is why you'd be jealous, especially at 20. Instead of focusing on her issues, work on your own. That's the best advice I can give. There are other reasons she may have been that way other than clinical depression. For instance, she may have suffered from some sort of abuse (physical or sexual) that manifested itself in violent tendencies. no. she gets a response from acting the way she does, so she will continue to act that way. She is the type of person who "Will's" their way into being sick. They concentrate so much on how they are sick that eventually their body gives in. And then of course they get the medication to treat their "sickness". And the cycle begins again. I would probably agree, I am a bit skeptical of serious mental illness in children, I think we often jump to wild conclusions without thinking about children being children too quickly. If its no problem now then great, if it is an ilness then it will resurface again in the future |
