How is depression diagnosed? Will going to the GP be enough?

How is depression diagnosed?
What does the doctor do to recognise that you have depression?
How do they know that you aren't just telling tem you have the symptoms & have them misdiagnose it as something else?
I went to the doctor a few months ago because i thought i had PMS, but the solution they provided isn't working, i feel worse than ever...
I don't really want to have to go to a shrink because i don't want to have to talk to someone i don't know about my problems- i just don't think it's any of their business.. Although i think (unfortunately) they're jut going to dismiss me if i just tell them my symptoms & don't "try and get to the root of the problem"

If you have depression it's going to be very hard to think your own way out of it as it is the confusion and pressures that are causing it. Most Psychologists are very helpful they don't judge you or think of you as wierd & strange. Talking through things with another person enables them to give you input and helps clear up some of the things that are troubling you. They may even help you see a way out of what seems to be an unfixable situation.
