Depression caused by withdrawal?

Hi all, I have a problem I really hope some of you could help explain.

Every time I finish a book I've gotten into, or a film I've liked ends, or a TV program, or whatever; I am filled with an intense feeling of dysphoria. I feel overwhelmed by malaise, and can't stop thinking of the story.
It makes me incapable of carrying out many tasks, and often I find myself pacing the house in an attempt to clear my thoughts.
I've always been very sensitive to alternate realities, and have a tendency to really get sucked into the storyline.
I realise many people experiance similar feelings at certain times; but for me it can get so bad I've considered just not reading any more books.

I sincerely hope someone out there could help explain to me what it is I'm going through; and maybe point out how to help me as well.

Thanks in advance

- Jimmy T

Yes Jimmy, I do have similar problems at times but not to the extent that it effects my life. The mechanism that causes this is called disassociation and your ability to do it appears to be very strong.

You have a good understanding of what is happening and why so you must obviously realize that you need to look into some professional help rather than giving up reading or watching movies. You can learn to modify your behavior to stop this from happening.

Best of luck.

There are several of people who are very sensitive these types of things. I would suggest that (because this is affecting your everyday life) that you not speculate about the cause any longer on your own and without a professional. Seek the advice of a psychologist with whom you can help you put your thoughts and feelings into perspective.

Hope this helps. Good luck to you going forward.

Hi Jimmy....it sounds more like OCD to me, have you spoken to a doctor? It's very easily treated these days.I do think you need to go see about it especially as it's preventing you doing things that you enjoy.x
