My depression vs. my dad's depression?

okay, first of all, i am seventeen and live with my grandmother. i rely on my dad for transportation and everything and he is my best friend.

i am very depressed. sometimes i get sad and i don't want to see anybody. he'll call me to hang out and i won't feel like it, so i'll call him back later and apologize. he gets touchy and short and acts sad, and then when i hang up i feel even worse. he knows i'm unhappy, but he is unhappy too, and then i think we both end up feeling worse.

i am so tired of feeling like this. please help me.

I know that you may not want to hear it, but, you need to talk to either a psychologist or psychiatrist about this issue. The difference between the two is that psychiatrist is a medical doctor that can prescribe medication and a psychologist cannot. Depending on how severe your depression is, you may or may not need medication as a part of your treatment. But, medication alone is rarely an effective treatment for depression; one of the best treatments for moderate-severe depression is a combination of medication and 'talk' therapy. Most good psychologists work with psychiatrists so that they can get you medication if they think that you need medication. Psychiatrists have limited psychological training, compared to psychologists. If you visit a psychologist and you don't like him/her don't go back and find one that you feel comfortable working with. Hope you find this helpful and good luck.

Do you know what manic depression is? It is something passed down to children from parents and so on. Hereditary, you know? Some of the time you feel OK then, for almost no reason at all, you will get stressed and just feel worn out for a day or two then feel OK again. You may have that- but I dunno. You can talk to a counselor about this with your dad, or not. It is all your choice. You decided to help yourself so now you are! That is the first step- to see the problem. GL and hope your relationship with your dad gets strong!
