Is depression considered a disease?

Is depression considered a disease?

Yes

EVERYONE gets depressed, it's part of the human condition. It's only a problem when it gets to be a problem.

If you are so severely depressed that you can work or eat or sleep, if you lose relationships, and/or if depression goes on for weeks and months and years, then it's a disease.

If you get depressed once in a while, when someone dies or you lose a job or something like that, well that's perfectly normal and natural. You couldn't call it a disease.

My understanding of disease is that is causes physical deterioration to the body that can spread or effect other systems. For example, heart disease is deterioration of the heart that progresses which is why folks are put on heart tranplant lists and who's in the worst shape rises to the top.

Everything in the psychiatric world once was classified as disorders or perhaps illnesses. With more recent knowledge, schizophrenia and bipolar are both being referred to as diseases more frequently because they are progressive if untreated, there are structural changes and lost of grey and white matter with that progression.

Depression is a bit complicated. It is a normal emotion that everyone experiences. Some problematic depression is due to situations, and often can be resolved with therapy or would resolve on it's own without "brain damage." There is inherited major chronic depression and recurring major depression that result in structural changes, but I don't think science is ready to call them diseases.

Yes it is. When it comes to mentail disorders/disease, the official manual is called the DSM (The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders), published by the American Psychiatric Association. Anything that is listed in the DSM is condsidered a disorder by United States psychiatrists.

it could be,
It can be solved with pills, like a disease (some diseases)
and Both can kill youu.
wow I feel smart!
Depression isnt cool, and neither are diseases..
I can think of so many but I will not name them

Yes and it is a very serious disease that needs attention ASAP and continue getting help or medication. This will really devastate your life and family if you ignore it.

It is an illness just as diabetes or any other health issues that can be treated with meds. It is not contagious so do not think it is actually in the disease category.

no it isn't it is more like a feeling because a disease is a sickness that can be spread and u cant spread depression

I dont feel it is a disease, but it is genetic.
