What is a "respiratory depression"?

And what are the symptoms? How can it be prevented?

I'm taking both Prozac and Zyprexa for depression. I heard that these two drugs can cause respiratory depression. Right now, Im experiencing shortness of breath. What should I do?

Respiratory depression is a term used to describe decreased breathing, usually in the setting of medication use. For example, in someone who takes too much opioids (e.g., oxycodone, etc.), the body's breathing can be slowed too much - this would be called respiratory depression.

Note that there are other causes aside from medications, but this term is still used when breathing is slowed too much.
