The great depression, who's educated on this?

10 points to best true story from your grand parents? this was reality. these people before the depression did have the luxuries that we have, and many died even tough as they were, . we are use to the push a button life. think we could survive o a depression now.? Food for thought. maybe just maybe by talking about it. some eyes will be opened.

My father could not find work. There was no work. Food and other commodities were cheap, but with no income, many folks could not buy. My parents had a bunch of kids. Many small town stores would give you credit for your purchases, but would expect you to pay them back on pay day. At one point, the family grocery man kept giving credit to my parents, until the bill was quite high. I suppose he felt sorry for us. But it got to the point where he could no longer do so, and he informed my parents that they could no longer buy groceries there until the bill was paid. My mother had a wealthy aunt who lived in the same town, and when the aunt heard of the plight of my parents, she went to the grocery store and paid the bill. This, then, enabled my folks to start buying food again.

I remember my grandpa would re-sole shoes. Folks wore their shoes until the soles had holes in them. Grampa would turn those shoes upside down on some sort of shoe form, and would cut and fit and paste new soles on the bottoms, so the shoes could be worn longer.

My mother often took a man's wool coat, cut it apart, and made coats for her children out of that one coat. We had one pair of shoes each. One good outfit, and one to play or go to school in.

Times were very tough.......the present generation has no clue.

My parents lived through the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. They were not wealthy people who lost everything. They were poor people who lost everything, which wasn't much, but they were fortunate to have been farmers. ...and Christians who always had faith that a better day was just around the corner. They didn't go to California and they didn't turn to the government, but they did grow enough food to manage to get by - and helped those who were even less fortunate. That's what Americans used to do.

My mother lived through the depression in the thirties. My father, a fisherman, was often out of work. There was no social help for them. They lived in a small Cornish village with three young children. My mother cooked chips and sold them to help out. Later on, she "took in visitors".

There were super rich people then who had just discovered the village and came for holidays, going out with the fishermen in their boats. One particular man was a shipping magnate.

Prince Charles and Camilla holiday there now and on Friday they named the local ferry.

Life has always been fair to the rich!

This is one story my mom told me of my grandfather and one of his sons ( my uncle )
would hitch hike and jump trains going from town to town to look for work. one late nite they crawled into what they thought was the back of a truck to catch some sleep but when morning came and they woke up they realized they had crawled into the back of a hearse

This one would be much much worse. I remember an aunt of mine when I was a boy, how she would store up treasure...
She got to see the federal reserve system at its infancy stage. I believe money failed first in E'gypt. Then again, my aunt lived on a farm and had nothing lacking:)
