I have depression, should I still substitute teach? |
I sub K-12. I have most of the typical depression symptoms and have had it on and off for fifteen years and it has crept back up on me again a few months ago. I have taken meds before and may need to see DR again, afraid it may be bad this time. you shouldn't substitute teach till ur happy again. That is sad how u have a depression, try fixing the depression by knowing what is making u sad, hope u feel better If the teaching is needed for income, I would continue to teach, unless you feel it is very detrimental to you or your students. I would get on an antidepressant immediately. There are a lot of good ones out there, which will take effect in a few weeks once you start. See a psychiatrist to get started on that. Call around to find one that will take you as soon as possible. The waiting list time can be months. Also schedule an appointment with your regular physician (GP)who will do complete blood workup on you checking your glands, blood sugar, etc to see if a medical disorder is contributing to your depression. If the depression is real bad, I would go to the health food store and pick up St. John's Wort and follow the bottle on how to take it. It is Germany's number one antidepressant. It usually works well for mild depression. Let your doctor know you are taking St. John's Wort if you decide to take that. They will have you stop St. John's Wort and have you start a pharaceutical antidepressant. You should NOT take both together. If your GP sees you first and puts you on an antidepressant, still see the psychiatrist. GP's usually are only comfortable with low doses and aren't really trained on antidepressants, antianxiety meds and mood stabilizers like psychiatrists are. The psychiatrist may also recommend cogntive therapy to help relieve stressors in your life. Depression is a serious condition that should be addressed as soon as possible. Go to your MD....and, depending on what other meds you are on, if any, you have to be very careful in taking St. Johns Wort. You are not a Doctor....you cannot diagnose yourself and prescribe meds for yourself. Example: my husband has an auto immune disease and has had it for 9 years. If he took St. Johns Wort....it would be very detrimental or possibly do him extreme harm. Go see a Dr., please . yes, see your dr. again so that you can still teach. No point in suffering when there are so many things that you can do for your depression. Best wishes Keep under a doctors care. They are the best one qualified to determine if your depression is at a level that you should avoid teaching. Good luck. if u are afriad it will affect ur teaching and the kids to sub then stop but if u think u can deal with ur depression and still sub without affecting them then go ahead. its up to u and how u feel. |
