Going to the doctor with Depression?

If I were to go to the doctor and tell hi about my depresssion, would he prescribe anti-depressants there and then or would he send me to a therapist to evaluate how bad it was?

I dont want to have to go to a therapist, i just want o feel better!

If you are prescribed medication it takes at least 30 days to notice a change and chances are good the first one may not be the right kind or dose so it's kind of trial and error. Don't be afraid of therapy- there usually aren't any quick fixes with pills and you want to solve the problem rather than just treat it right? Not to mention that some of the side effects can be worse than the initial problem. The right therapist, someone you respect and can relate to, can sometimes be just what the doctor ordered. And if you don't like the first one don't be afraid to ask for someone else-they will understand. I hope you will feel better soon, no matter what you choose.

If you go to a psychiatrist he/she will perscribe anti depression drugs. But in the long run you should seek therapy, because taking a drug is like putting a bandage on a sore, it might make you feel better for now but therapy will get to the bottom of what is making you depressed so you can try to work your way out of it.Most people don't want to live on drugs forever, If you don't seek therapy you may always be afraid that you can't live without taking the drugs. "speaking from my experience" I know what its like to be depressed, You might feel that no one understands but there are a lot of people out there that suffer from depression. Do everything you can do to get better. God Bless

Just tell your local doctor and just say I would really rather not go to a therapist and im sure hell be happy to do what makes you feel comfortable. remember nothing he says makes you do anything. But therapy can help but it's up to the person if they are willing to do that or to try something else. Feel Better

my doctor asked if i wanted to go to a therapist i new what was wrong i told him this and just said i needed something to help me get through my troubles so i could sort them out. so hopefully it will be the same for you. good luck

It all depends n the doctor. Some will prescribe meds and refer you for therapy others just the meds and others just therapy.

Hi hunni

Your gp could do both, give you meds & refer you to see a therapist.

Good Luck hunni. X :-)
