Does St. Johns Wort make a noticable difference for depression?

Also does it affect the depo contraception injection as i have heard it affects the pill.

The reason that St. Johns Wort affects the pill is because it speeds up the metabolism. I think that is why anyway. With that in mind do you still think it would affect the injection? seeing as though you do not ingest it?

The Mind website says it interacts with the oral contraceptive.

I would either go ask a proper pharmacist like at Boots, or see your doctor.

St johns Wort is just as powerful as antidepressants like prozac, so I never understand how we can buy it over the counter.

Yes, it is effective for some depressions. but so are antidepressants. And antidepressants are properly regulated and prescribed, whereas St Johns isn't.

Some studies have shown it does help, and other studies have shown St Johns Wort to exacerbate anxiety/depression. I tried it when I had bad anxiety a year or so ago and it did nothing for me, but friends of mine have sworn it worked for them. My naturopath advised me not to take it, and gave me other herbal remedies which helped me alot!

As for the contraception issue, it definitely affects the pill so I would assume it would affect the injection also.

I have taken St. John's Wort for several years now (autumn/winter only) and I feel that it has helped me. As a scientist I can't guarantee that this was not a placebo effect and I also have no way of knowing how I would have felt without it.

The UK committee on the Safety of Medicines recommends that St. John's Wort should not be taken at the same time as any other medication and the American FDA suggest that it should not be taken with any drug metabolised by the cytochrome P450 Enzyme pathway.

I would NOT risk taking St. John's Wort with a hormonal contraceptive method.

I took St.johns wart for a while and it did not help me but I guess it's worth a try. I know you can't take it with other anti-depressants but i do not know about other tablets so please consult your doctor first about this.

St. John`s wort is very good to help winter depression but I was told not to take it between the end of March & September because of the effect the sun can have on it.

Yes, in Germany and some other northern European countries (where people are prone to depression), st johns wort is PRESCRIBED INSTEAD OF ANTIDEPRESSANTS!!

i don't know if it affects the pill but as an alternative to anti-depressants it can help

I've never tried it. Some swear it works, but that could be a placebo effect. I don't know for sure.
