How would you word it on your resume/CV if you were off work because you were off sick because of depression?

How would you word it on your resume/CV if you were off work because you were off sick because of depression?

Just say exactly what you said in your question.
"I have had sick leave due to depression"

There are so many people that just dont understand its an illness ,to be honest i would put i was travelling ,but i have done a lot so i wouldnt feel so bad,you could say you took time out for you, does your last employer not know why you were off sick ,wont they ring for a reference? its a tough old world out that people may take the person without the depression,i know for sure im never going to tick the boxs you see on applications have you had a mental illness, etc and i do have a mental illness and one that there is a lot of stigma around ,luckily i have not any blank spaces in my cv,i feel a white lie doesnt hurt, but its what your happy with

dont highlight the gap in anyway in your cv, just put one work experience after another - does not matter if there is a gap.

if they mention it in the interview 'where were you during this period' just say i had to unfortunately stay away from work due to personal reasons which have now been resolved and say with a smile that you are now looking forward to getting back to a new challenge.

if they try to dig avoid saying it was depression - say it was long term illness or personal problems - unless you are employed by them, you are not obliged to tell them this.

also if you mention depression it is likely to be put down as one of your negative points (as in it may happen again) and for the recruitment part you want to highlight all your positives as much as possible.

You should be honest, because if they find out and it turns out you cant do the job, they have every right to sack you. You were sick, be honest. If you dont want to say why you were off sick, or what illness put "period of extended illness", if they ask further questions, refer them to your doctor. They probably wont bother asking, but at least you gave them the opportunity to find out.

First of all what type of job are you applying for? If it is physical labor I would not put down disablity. Yes I know that employers are not allowed to discriminate but they are human and if they find a better canidate for the job they. Do not leave a blank in resume but just say that you were taking personal time off of work.

If you don't mind bending the truth a bit say your were looking after an infirm then dying relative like you great aunt or something. They will probably only ask a few question about it so say she was just old and you were very found of her so volunteered to look after her but are now refocusing that commitment to the resuming of your career path.

Funny, I was wondering the same thing. Seeing all the answers, I would just leave it blank, if they ask I would say something pertaining to my situation eg: I was a stay at home Mom during this period, attending coursed outside of your area. I like the follow up comment, letting them know that for whatever reason, you are now ready to get going again. Thanks for reading my mind ha ha

say that you were off having to deal with personal problems in your life/at home...if asked in an interview do not give details, just say personal problems and home that you have since resolved and are looking forward to getting back into the work force and going forward in your career field

I wouldn't say that. If you were out of work for a significant amount of time and need to explain gaps in your employment, just put that you were "on disability". They shouldn't need further elaboration than that.

wouldnt bother .... because my immediate reaction... may be the same as theres ...... depression or idolitis?!?! sorry but there you go thats my opinion...
we all have our own ways of coping with lifes sh..........ite.... but taking time off work is often the wrong one cos hard work takes your mind off all the problems...................................

unemployed period of time = "Career exploration and preparation". Be prepared to give some examples.

I would just put down that I was on short term disability. If in interview they ask you why say it's personal and leave it at that. :-)

Don't - leave the gap in your work dates. If you are asked in the interview, say it was because of long-term sick.

I wouldn't
