Could my diet be worsening my depression?

I'll be seeing my doctor this week so I will be raising the issue with him so I'm looking for other peoples experiences.

My depression seams to becoming less manageable by my medication. Recently I've struggled with my moods when I felt great 6 months ago on the same meds. One thing that has changed is my diet but I intended to eat healthier in the aim of it having a positive effect on my mood.

I do not eat large amounts of dairy, i.e I don't drink milk but I do buy chocolate occasionally. I do not eat wheat or refined sugars generally, i.e I don't eat bread but I do buy chocolate occasionally.... I eat salad, fruit, raw and cooked veg, nuts (not peanuts), dried fruit. Soya milk and yogurt, meat and fish, no pasta, no potatoes, no rice.

Rice and potatoes are not a big deal, I'm not against eating them for health reasons they just appear to be filler in a diet where diversity is key.

If I was to eat conventionally and enjoy all the foods a normal person ate then I would be conventionally fat and conventionally upset about it. I'm not underweight, I'm a healthy 150 pounds at 5' 10'.

pesonally, ur diet shouldn't change how ur mood is going.

BTW, why don't u eat rice, it's been proven that rice has every single vitamin inside of it with the exception of vitamin A. This is the reason why poeple in poorer countries eat this, u can get vitamin A in carrots and Broccoli.

Just eat like a normal person would!
(that means not as much chocolate!)

XD

I would say you need more (unrefined) carbs. Brown basmati rice is good for slow release energy. Stoneground bread, if you can find it, is healthy and releases energy slowly. Maybe start eating quinoa and buckwheat noodles.

I'm not sure why you've cut out carbs. I think you need more of a balance. If you don't have enough carbs, your brain will not function as well and you'll feel even more depressed. So I'd say keep up with what you're doing but add more bulk like oats, wholemeal bread and unrefined grains.

its stressful just to listen to what youre cutting out of your diet. You're cutting out virtually all the things you need in your diet so even if youre slim youre being so unhealthy which im sure can't be good for your depression. To get healthier you need to eat most of these foods again, but in the right amount and exercise plenty, it releases endorphins which make you happy,x

Sounds healthy, but you can have pasta, potatoes, rice if you like.

Go for a brisk walk every day, you'll feel a lot better for it.

I wouldn't blame the diet but what would it hurt to try some extra carbs for a week to see if it helps you? Add in some healthy whole grains--quinoa, barley, whole oats, etc. Carbs in the later part of the day help people sleep better and maybe that might be a solution.

You might want to start exercisng more as that is known to make depression medicines work better.

Maybe there are things that are stressing you more than usual and you have a reason to be a little sadder?

Have you tried meditation or affirmations or things along those lines? Look into Dr Andrew Weil

Make an appt to see your doctor. Medicines do see to always need to be tweaked and adjusted. Maybe yours does too!

Your diet sounds really good, actually. It sounds like the sort of diet my doctor advised ME to adopt when I came to her with depression.
Wheat/dairy/refined sugars and hydrogenated fats are all stuff that gives us temporary highs in mood due to their production of L-Tryptophan, the 'happy' chemical in our brains. But then there's a slump.

My depression is only really alleviated when I eat clean foods - that's pretty much food that hasn't been touched or processed. A week would be spent eating mainly - porridge (made with water), chicken breast, steamed vegetables, fresh fruit and not much else. And of course gallons of water.

This 'clean foods' diet comes with an exercise program of half an hour per day weights and cardio.

When I lost weight, was when I felt my very best.

I've never tried medication, though my doctor has suggested it for the past year. I'm worried about becoming dependent on something, and prefer to try getting rid of my depression in natural ways.

I hope this helps a little.
X
