What are the processes involved in getting diagnosed with depression?

I think i am suffering from mild depression. what are the processes involved in getting diagnosed? How long will it take?

I think that the doctor will simply diagnose you after talking to you. If I feel low I take St John's Wort and it really perks me up. Give this a try and if you still feel down in the dumps, visit your doctor. I have read that St John's Wort is as effective as any prescription drugs. However if you are on the contraceptive pill don't take St. John's Wort as it will negate its effects

I have had major depression for 2 years of my life. Be sure to go to a mental health facility and not your family doctor. Reason being there is a ton of mental health drugs and most family practice doctors tend not to understand them all. They also tend to be very misunderstanding of how physical and illness depression can be.

I take abilify and celexa daily and have been taken various antidepressants for years. Keep in mind that side effects can be harsh as the symptoms if your just suffering mild depression. Maybe try exercise and b vitamins first.

Antidepressants are harsh and take weeks to work. It may take many months to find the right dose or drug. Its not very fun going through finding the right drug at all.

My suggestion is to see your doctor first and then try exercise and vitamins second.

I was diagnosed last year and it was as simple as going to the doctors, being honest an then they put me through to a therapist and offered me medication. It will not take long at all if you go to your doctors and explain truthfully. There may be a waiting list for the therapy but the doctors are usually there for a support aid while waiting out for it. I highly suggest you do not wait any longer, even with mild depression, you can find yourself spiraling down to a darker place, fast. So i recommend you do it now and get the help you need!

Go to the doctor, have a discussion about it and doctor will decide if you are depressed or not. Doctor maybe prescribe medication for you, AND if doc thinks you need counselling then there should be discussion on that as well. I have had depression for a few years but Only went 2 years ago and have had counselling and medication, I am almost back to normal now and hoping to come off the meds. So it does no harm to go and have a chat. Sometimes we need to ask for help.

take up a hobey stop feeling sorry for yourself get out and meet people people that are enjoying life people that are positive people that do not use the words im bored i lived 20 years with a person who took every drug under the sun to combat depression including 15 shock treatments at homewood sanitarium the biggest thing that i have come to realise isthat when their self esteam level is low depression sets in when this begins to happen no drugs will help think in the positive life is short dont waste it feeling sorry for your self or trying to understand whats wrong, you are not physicaly sick you have very little control over that but you can at least control what you are thinking be positve in every thing you say and do good luck paul

When I saw my doctor I explained everything to him, he advised counseling first, there was a 2 months waiting list though. I took the counseling but unfortunately for me, it did not work. I've yet to go back and see what the next step is.

Sorry if this doesn't help...

All the best!
