Is it better to see a psychiatrist or psychologist for anxiety disorders/depression?

How do you go about finding one?

They both will be helpful. Psychiatrists will be able to write perscriptions for you, but your family doctor can give you anti-depressants and meds for anxiety so. . .its up to you. I think its a little easier to get an apointment with a psychologist. But counselors are also well trained and can offer a lot of help as well.

If you have insurance, you might want to get a list of mental health professionals that they will pay for. Some insurance companies have strict guidlines on who they will pay for you to see and who they won't. So I'd start there. Then just check them out. You may have to shop around for one that you click with but when you get the right one you will be comfortable to open up with them and can begin to recover! Also take into consideration before hand what gender would be preferrable to you - if you have one. Some feel more comfortable with a same gendered counselor and some just don't care. It would help to have some idea which you will be more comfortable, because it will help to narrow the search field.

Good Luck!

Good luck!
Both can be good I would try the psychologist first then go the other route if you need more help.
I go to a Family Doctor for depression. Your Doctor will help you decide if you need to seek another route, such as a Psychologist.
In most states (although this is changing rapidly), psychologists are not prescription providers. They are, however, generally better trained (IMHO) in the provision of psychotherapy.

Psychiatrists, on the other hand, can (and do) prescribe medication. Over the past decade or so, their role has changed somewhat, and many provide very little psychotherapy now (rather, they write prescriptions and monitor meds).

So, in answer to your question...if you are in need of therapy, see a psychologist. If you are in need of therapy AND medication (this is THE strongest approach to the treatment of mood disorders, by the way), then employ the services of both a psychiatrist AND a psychologist.

Best of luck to you,

First you go to the shrink and then he will deliver you to a psychiatrist if he / she thinks is convinient for you. Your anxiety and depression could be due to many reasons... maybe some medication you are taking, even bc pills so then there麓s no need to go th a psychiatrist, it麓s just a matter of changing your prescription. Good luck!
A Psychiatrist. a psychiatrist studies how the mind thinks. Studies how your emotions react to certain things. A psychologist studies how the mind operates. A psychologist does not only study the human mind. A psychiatrist is taught to listen to your thoughts and feelings not taught to know which nerve operates which part of the body.
