Explain the common therapeutic phenomenon that accounts for the increased risk of suicide as depression begins to resolve. Sometimes, when people make the serious decision to commit suicide, they actually start to feel better. They believe the pain is going to stop, that there will be an end, so the depression resolves. That is why some people get so surprised when someone dies by suicide when they were doing so well. A common symptom of deep depression is a semi-vegetative state in which it is difficult to complete even normal activities of daily living (self-cleaning, laundry, meal preparation, etc.). People sometimes cannot even get out of bed. Once the depression begins to lift, however, the energy to accomplish tasks sometimes returns before the hopelessness that characterizes a depressed mood starts to improve. Therefore, a person may carry out a suicide attempt they had considered for a long time but lacked the energy to act upon. If the suicidal acts can be prevented, it is highly likely that the suicidal thinking will dissipate as the depression continues to improve. Author is a licensed mental health practitioner.
