Why do men feel as though they shouldn't get help for their depression?

I have depression and i think my brother does too but he refuses to take medicaion. When I talked to my doctor about this she said that men are less likely to take anti-depresents. why is this?

Well, to start, let me tell you that I am a man and I am being treated for depression and I do take my meds and it is well worth it.

That being said, I think the majority of men that won't take the medication for being depressed feel it isn't macho to do so. They have this stupid idea that it isn't manly to have depression, that it is a woman's disease and therefore they are weak if they have it. What they don't realize that men probably have it more than women and it can be brought on by stress.

That means that the more successful a man becomes (manly or macho) then the more stress that can be brought on by the job which can cause the depression (feminine trait??). Now, if you take a logical look at this, it would seem to me that having depression would be a macho thing because of the nature of the job or career that the man has involved himself in.

So, tell your brother to take his meds, the depression is a badge of manhood. Good luck to both of you, I hope the recovery path is short. With the meds it will be compared to the alternative. Source(s): Personal experience
I think it is due to the fact most men are so macho they hate to admit illness...depending on his age...it could also be seen as being "crazy" to seek help in the mental area...that is what my father thought...:-}
Because they don't want to appear vulnerable and weak
