Can religion spirituality or reading the bible help in turning the tables on depression?

This question was previously asked by Anonymous, and he/she chose the best 'answer' for themselves. I would like to ask this same question not just specifically for psychiatrists and psychologists, but, for those who have studied and/or are living proof of having experienced it first hand. "All" answers "will" be noticed!

At one time in my life I was very faithful to pray and read my bible. I am born again, but let a lot get in the way of that now. I still have all the same mental disorders, but I can honestly say I am a happy person. I am bipolar and have severe narcolepsy/cataplexy and it effects my entire life...but somehow I still am very content in life. i get down...but it doesn't take much to help me back up again. I do believe the Lord does that , even though I might have skipped out on Him currently, doesn't mean He skipps on you. If you believe...that is te only way it works...not if anyone else believes.
I believe it does. Reading God's word is uplifting in itself. But it's the power of prayer that will pull you from depression.
Have a bowl of ice cream first, chocolate is the best. It is a pr oven mood enhancer. But also reading anyone of the 4 gospels is comforting also. Try both at the same time. Nirvana....
I believe finding God and having that hope can turn the tables on depression. I think if someone really finds God and puts their trust in him, and looks to him with their problems they can definitely turn things around. A few people I know were in this same situation where they were really depressed whether it was sorta hereditary, or caused by a hard life, or just because they were depressed, and the medicines didn't work for them, but when they started going to an upbeat church, and learning about God and finding that hope, their whole lives were changed. This is just my experience through close friends and family, hopefully this helps answer your question :) Good luck finding the answers you are looking for.

I think it absolutely can. Find religion is like finding hope and peace. It gives them a feeling that lets them know that what ever is going on in there life now doesn't matter. They have a seperate purpose for there life and that life doesn't end with death.
I have chronic depression and so when I get depressed at first I just relied on food but as my relationship with God grew I discovered that if I read the Bible when I was depressed that it lifted my spirits. I have tried it and it works. God works miracles.
YES, Jesus died own the cross so that we would have Hope and no suffering, He wants us happy only Satan wants you depressed:
