I would like to be seen by someone to determine if I have depression. Where do I start...??? |
I'd like to know where to start. I've seen my doctor and she gave me meds but I didn't even pick them up at the pharmacy. I was afraid of what they would do to me. If they'd affect my behavior in a negative way as opposed to helping me. I have young children so I don't want to "experiment" with these meds while I'm caring for them. If I didn't have children, I'm pretty sure I'd just go on living my life this way. But they need for me to be stable. Also, I'd like to enjoy my life with them. And, not to mention, being this way is effing annoying!!! You family doc is the one to start with and you already saw him and he gave you meds. You need to take them to find out if they help or not. NO doctor no matter who you see can guarantee that the first med you try will be the right one for you. Take the med your doc prescribed so you can find out if it is the right drug for you. ask your doctor about it. find out what the side effects will be. if you dont like the sound of them ask about other medications. If you have insurance call your insurance company line and ask them to send you a list of psychologist in their network and find out your co-pay ... the practical stuff. I think not taking psych medications while your pregnant is a good idea, but you should talk about it with your doctor. If you have a strong feeling about not taking medications they can recommend therapy maybe. This was the same sort of thing I worried about, and the first two prescriptions I got from a GP. They didn't do anything for me, but have helped others. Then I went to a psychiatrist, and what he gave me did the trick. You're worried that they'll turn you into a loony toon or a zombie, but that isn't how they work. If the effect IS undesirable...well, that's why you see a psychiatrist for a while until your medication and dose is established. I wish I'd done it (seen a psychiatrist) several years ago, because I just gave up when the first couple of meds made no difference. If you would prefer, see a specialist. Ask your MD to send you to a shrink: they are the experts. Being nuts is not good for your kids. They need security and due to CLINICAL depression they can never be sure about you. Symptoms of depression include irritability, tiredness, insomnia (or hypersomnia) and a host of other things including unstable mood. Your kids deserve better, and for them you need to be the best you can be. There will be a bit of experimentation: just like no two snowflakes are alike, neither is the physiology of two patients. Some types of meds are better for certain types of symptoms, taken at a certain time of day at a certain dosage...some people experience side effects so drugs need to be switched...while at the same time other patients on the same drug experience NO side effects...more modern drugs have far fewer associated (potential) side effects than the older ones. ETC., ETC., ETC.. Just trust your doctor (or have him send you to a specialist) and you can look forward to feeling better in the not too distant future. You will NOT change into a different person, so get that right out of your head! EDIT: "Jane B" wrote: "I have noticed that family doctors give out a lot of medications but never really take the time to listen to your actual problems". Guess what: your GP has your visit timed down to (5-10, usually around 7) minutes. They won't get paid a penny more if they spend longer with you. They will only give themselves a backlog; a waiting room full to capacity of angry patients. On top of that they have paperwork about you to do. YES, that's precisely how it's done; you weren't imagining it, folks. A shrink is less likely to process you in assembly-line fashion. They won't, in fact. The repercussions of treating patients in such a manner could be huge (suicide=malpractise suits). Been there, done that. If you want someone that really can help you, find a therapist. Family doctors are not trained well enough to deal with people with depression and panic attacks. I have panic attacks. I have noticed that family doctors give out a lot of medications but never really take the time to listen to your actual problems. I would go see a therapist and have them listen to all your concerns. They will be able to tell if you are actually depressed or just have some anxiety issues. They are two seperate things and people confuse them all the time. It is possible you are just having anxiety issues. |
