What is the best way to help someone with Bi-Polar Disorder/Manic Depression?

When the local community support team has been disbanded through lack of funds and the family are left to cope on their own?

I have been around many bipolar people in my life. My foster daughter is just one of them. The best thing to do for them is to chart EVERYTHING. Keep record of when moods go up and down. This is the most valuable tool for a doctor to have to help.

For a support team, there is a great Web site that may help. The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance www.dbsalliance.org

Good luck. And remember.....you aren't alone. There are people out there dealing with the exact same thing that you are. Stay strong. people with Bipolar Disorder have a chemical imbalance, they aren't doing the things they do on purpose. (I have to remind myself sometimes!) Source(s): www.dbsalliance.org
www.bipolarsupportgroup.net
I have been there..... done that! (And still am!)
I hate to say it, but medication. My Uncle had both and he was on medication, when he stopped tragedy happened.
Good luck and keep hope. This won't be easy.
How to Help Someone With Depression
Everyone goes through bad patches of their lives, but if that bad patch lasts a couple of months, they probably have depression, so heres some tips to help your friends from someone who has these problems.

Steps
Find out what is wrong. Even if the depressed person won't tell you find out from friends or a teacher.
Do things together. Hang out at lunch, invite them over to your house, do things on the weekend, anything to get them out.
Give them attention. They might not open up immediately but when they do make sure you listen to them without judging them or making them feel stupid.
Comfort them. Give them lots and lots of hugs, and not just quick little one second hugs unless thats what they want, buy them gifts or do something special for them
Do not judge. It's not their fault they are like this, sometimes they just can't help it.
Be a friend. If they look down that day, cheer them up. Compliment them or make them laugh.

Tips
Do something nice for them, more often than you usually do.
If you have romantic feelings for them try not to use this as a way to get closer to them.
If you can't talk to them try writing them or give them a shout on MSN or whatever, the point is get to them.

Warnings
If you think your friend might try to kill themselves tell somone now. Listen to them if they talk about death or if they start giving away stuff or buying guns and knives and make sure a responsible adult knows.
If they have a plan for suicide (Ie, they tell you that they have razors hidden, or they memorized the train schedules so they can throw themselves in front) get help, immediately. Even if you feel like you're betraying your friend by telling, you're not--you would be betraying your friend by not helping them.
If they start sounding paranoid or delusional or start talking about hallucinations make sure a doctor knows, because this could be a sign of a serious problem.
Never compare their lives to someone else's.
If you have feelings for them, once again, don't use this as an excuse to hit on them. You might think you're helping them but it can make them feel really unpleasant if they know you're taking advantage of this.
Don't agree with them if they say their life stinks; don't get even more negative. You won't help if you argue with them.
If they've been feeling down for more than a couple of months don't think they're just sad, they probably have clinical depression.
thye shopuld be on lithium
also if they can get a few appointments with a cognitive behavioural therapist that would be helpful.
