How would one describe a "nervous breakdown". Is it a period of intense depression or anxiety?

you have the definition of nervous breakdown correctly described. it's a terrible time of despair, depression, horrific anxiety, loss of self-esteem, negative thoughts, ideation with suicide, loss of the ability to focus and concentrate, a feelig of losing one's mind, not being able to control crying sessions, wanting to isolate oneself, etc.
if any of these symptoms sound familiar, you need to see a psychiatrist. you can't recover from this illness without professional intervention. the psychiatrist will listen to your symptoms, decide on a proper diagnosis, councel you, and prescribe a medication (usually an anti-depression AND anti- anti-anxiety medication) to assist in relieving your symptoms.
it may take between 6-8 weeks for the clincial impact to be felt fully. eventually the veil of sadness and anxiousness will abate.
i have to add, if you are considering suicide, please remember this line: SUICIDE IS A PERMANENT SOLUTION TO A TEMPORARY PROBLEM.
depression and anxiety are caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. you did not cause the illness. when this balance is disturbed, all sort of negative thoughts go through our mind: i want to kill myself to end the pain and suffering, i don't deserve to be alive, i'm useless and unlovable, this suffering will never go away, etc.
there is hope for recovery. please see a psychiatrist ASAP.
finally, fight to live!
I think it is an intense depression where you lose all faith in yourself and everyone else. (That includes God). You can't do anything and you think you can't do anything which is a vicious cycle.
nervous break down is simply imotional instability
that means ur imotions or ur thinking or ur mind is not in ur control
it may be due to stress or depression
"Burn out" "Hit the wall" "Life out of control". As the other poster stated, feelings of depression/anxiety. I liken it to spiraling down the road at a fast pace (like life these days) in a souped up sports car, singing and rushing along....and then you hit a tree. Full stop.
The old terms are still used. This used to mean a period of the onset of 'nuts' or a disassociation if ideas to the brain. The lower brain is a telephone operator directing incoming messages to the upper two brains. When stress related chemicals interfere with the signals a wrong phone number is used and words can mean other words and the resulting confusion is a breakdown of logical thinking. Repair takes months if not years as each nerve sheath has to be restored.
