How would YOU personally deal with someone who is suffering horrible bouts of depression? |
This person absolutely refuses to get treatment, but constantly wants everyone to feel sorry for him. Depression is like a downward spiral where the person cannot stop thinking in a negative pattern, this feeds on itself and can become crippling to the point where the person can hardly function. Telling the person what they need to do will normally not help, in fact it sometimes makes the problem worse because they may feel that blame is being added (like it's their fault they are feeling this way). Personally, I would do my best to be a good listener, remind them of their good qualities and encourage them by mentioning some positive things through the conversation. They won't get better overnight, it will take some time and a number of talks. Source(s): Just my experience and opinion I to suffer from horrible bouts of depression. There isnt anything that you can do but be there for him. Nothing that you say is going to make it better. Trust me I have done the whole doctor thing and it didnt work at all for me. So Im not on medication. It makes life hard. But Im lucky that I have a wonderful boyfriend and 2 wonderful sons. Not to mention great parents and super friends that stand by me and just let me blubber on when I go through one of these spells. There isnt anything that you can do if he doesnt want help. Just be there to hold his hand as long as you can. I know that it gets on your nerves to listen to it but just be honest with him . LIFE drug them with antidepressants without their knowing would be my initial response but that is illegal so you can't do it. maybe get a third party to talk to them. Someoen who is impartial? Well if this person is just looking for pity he may not even be depressed. This is possible, there are lots of people who like to play games. A true depressive is not looking for pity, they may not want to go for treatment either though for many reasons. Depression for everyone is different and it is hard to say why this one won't go for treatment, could it be financial? It is not easy to pay for this treatment. Also they feel so utterly hopeless they just figure they will be wasting someones time.. There are alot of variables here and I wish I could help more Me personally I would say if they are feeling depressed to talk with someone about it, that I am not capable of providing the help they need. Maybe a pastor at a church, or a school counselor.. tell them you are having a hard time yourself dealing with their depression and if they won't get help there is really nothing you can do. Just love them if you do and hope that it works out for them. Don't feel sorry for them.... that is ploy Depression is a very tricky illness. Most people don't want to deal with a person who is depressed, so many people who are depressed try to hide it. I don't know that your friend wants everyone to feel sorry for him, that is what some people think because when they are around that depressed person that is how they feel towards them. I think your friend would really like the sadness he feels to go away. Some medications have serious side effects which also include the possibility of increased suicidal thoughts. Medication is not always the solution for everyone. I would try to get them to talk to a therapist to see if it is something in their past or present living situation that is causing the depression. Try to get them to go out for a walk, they will feel better. Take them out to a movie (a good comedy might help to put a smile on their face) and help them to lighen up a little. He basically has to find the solution to his depression. |
