How should I determine whether to medicate or not to combat low-level depression? |
In general I don't like the idea of taking pills to solve problems...So many in today's society are looking for a "quick fix"...I've been reluctant to resolve my "blue mood" by taking an anti-depressant, but then again, if the meds really work and the side effects are minimal, maybe I ought to give it a try!??! See a counsellor to deal with your issues. Also, try cutting out sugar! It can cause "sugar blues." Watch your diet. Sometimes poor nutrition can give depression-like symptoms. See your doctor, as well. You might have a physical condition that could be treated early and relieve the depression-like symptoms. medicate! Try meditation, volunteering, a hobby, whatever you can think of to combat the depression. If this doesn't work then try the medication. Even if you do have to go on an anti-depressant, you may not have to stay on it long-term. I too have bouts of depression, sometimes I can snap out of it on my own, sometimes I can't. When I can't, I call my doc and he will give me Prozac. (I know Prozac has a bad rep, but it has always worked for me) I'll take the med for 3-6 months and I taper off of it. I may not need to go back on it for several years, but it's nice to know that there is something that will help if I need it. Try other non-medicinal treatments first but if they do not work, medication may be the only solution. Ask a doctor about what you should do. I have suffered from depression for a while. I am on a medication now called Effexor, and was on one before called Zoloft. Neither one has really helped. The Zoloft did nothing at all for me. The Effexor had me "out of it" when I first started taking it. I've been on it Since August or September, and I'm still depressed. The Dr. tried giving me a higher dosage, but I was really out of it then, so he lowered it back, and I'm probably gonna gradually get off because its not helping, but you can't just stpo taking them suddenly. So I would say be careful, and see if there is anything else possible that you can do to help you feel better. Oh, and by the way, a lot of the meds' side effects are more severe depression, and get this, suicide. I would talk to a doctor and try medication. I don't like taking medication either, but sometimes depression can be due to a chemical imbalance in the brain. It really depends on how long it has been going on, if it has only been a little while I would try other methods, distraction, doing something you like. However, if it has been a while and you continuously feel this way I would definetly suggest medication. I know it can be difficult but it can help. There can be side effects, you would need to talk to your doctor. I have been on prozac for a year now on and off. I am happier when I am on it, and miserable when I am not. But I have never had any side effects, and I tend to be more sensitive to them. You may need to try a few before you get to the right one, but most people can find one that works well for them with a low level of side effects. Hope this helps. |
