True or False: "People are about as happy or sad as they decide to be." I've had depression for decades. |
Yes, I am in therapy and take an appropriate anti-depressant at the standard dosage. I just plain wonder if I could "will" myself to be happier. False. If you could "will" yourself to be happier, then, by definition you don't have clinical depression (just a normal range of sadness). Once you slide down the continum of mood into the "depression" realm, it is difficulty to get out without some type of assistance - the pervasive feelings of hopelessness, shame, and worthlessness render someone to feel helpless about changing, which is one contributor to why it can not be willed away - another is, quite simply, biology. As I'm sure you know, we inherit a genetic predisposition to develop depression - so there is a strong biological influence. Depression is not 100% mental; without attacking it on multiple prongs (behavior, cognitions, biology) - it will not subside - so thus, it can not be willed away any easier than a broken thumb can be. Although, as with anything, your mindset/will can improve outcomes - but alone they are insufficient. i feel like im clinically depress but have no help. im too depress to get help Yes you can "will" yourself to be happier. You defintely need treatment but along with your treatment it depends on you too. Life is what you make it.....always has been, always will be when did you start to be depressed maybe you have broken up with you wife of a family member died think outside the box You most likely have an emotional disorder (no offense). You might be able to will yourself happier, with proper therapy and willpower, since depression is a mental problem. So technically, subconsiously, people are about as happy or sad as they decide. Just that they don't know they are deciding it. I, too, am in therapy and on anti-depressants. However, I do believe that some of our mental health is affected by our mindset. Haven't you ever depressed yourself by thinking about something sad in a pessimistic manner? I've found that if something sad comes along (which it inevitably does), instead of allowing myself to sink back into my depression, finding something positive about the experience is really helpful. Like with a death? Instead of never being able to spend another day with the rest of us, remember that they're in a better place...an eternity of heaven (if you believe in that) or nothingness is way better than what we've got right now. Be happy that that person has moved on to a new plane of existence. You know? So, yeah, mindset and the decision to be optimistic can definitely affect your mood. |
