If you have been depressed for years. how on earth can you considor yourself an expert on escaping depression?

you know what step 1 is? stop thinking about depression.

step 2. add some color to your life.

so many people talk about meds. they say things like "i have been depressed for 17 years and this med really helps."

does anyone else agree with me?

I don't completely agree with you, but there may be some merit to your statement. Not all depression is created equally. I believe that in some cases of mild depression simple lifestyle changes may help. In other instances, therapy, especially cognitive thinking therapy may be most effective. However, in many cases of depression, the cause is an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. One of these is Bipolar Disorder, which I live with. The only proven method to restore those chemical imbalances is through medication. I am very thankful for the medications that have allowed me to live with more normal moods and less depression. I do not consider myself an expert on this subject. I can only tell others of my experience and how my life has changed because of the steps I have taken. I have done a great deal of research on Bipolar Disorder and while not expert on it I do understand a good bit about it.

Sincerely,
Terry
I don't agree with you that it's as simple as not thinking about depression, but I agree that it seems odd that people think pills are the solution, especially when they have so many side-effects.

I am to depressed to answer.
It may be true. They were all depressed for years and have learned to come out of it. Thus they know the feelings of a depressed and can advise well on how to come out of it!!!
I suppose suppressing one's feelings and distracting one's thoughts are two ways of dealing with depression, but many people do not find these actions to be effective at relieving their symptoms. People who struggle with diabetes, asthma, and a host of other illnesses often know what brings on symptoms or attacks and they also know how to prevent them. Changes in behavior (e.g., not eating sweets for diabetics) or using medications (e.g., inhalers for asthmatics) can help tremendously--so it is for people with depression. Behavioral modifications and medications have been proven to help depression; so, I believe it is unnecessarily insensitive to belittle those who take advantage of these treatments.
