My six year son is always having a bad day or the worst day ever" is he to young for depression?

I have a six year old cries at the drop of a hat; if he doesn't want to leave his papa's or can't stay the night with his aunt mainly. but he also cries over flipping tickets at school or if he can't go for a walk. he also expresses that he's had a bad day almost every other day and sometimes goes so far as to say that this is the worst day ever. he just doesn't seem happy. is he to young for depression and is there anything i can do to get him out of it? he is into sports and likes to go to the park and is active.

Talk to your pediatrician....now. There may be a biological cause, but you aren't going to know without an assesment. If there is no evidence of a physiological root for the behavior, then something may have happened that you don't know about. There is no way you can give enough info in a question that is sufficient for any kind of definitive answer. So, get some professionals working on the issue.

Good luck.
he is spoiled. or he is weird. but depression can start very early
He really needs to be checked out, because this lashing out is very unhealthy and may get worse as he gets older. There has to be an underlying cause; the faster you learn then it can be treated before it really spirals out of control.
Something is causing him to be upset. Its not normal for anyone that young to be that depressed. You need to do some more investigating. Is he like that because of someone at school? Is someone in the neighborhood bothering him? What type of foods does he eat? Alot of synthetic type stuff? Refined sugars? Has a relative done anything to him? You're going to have to play detective and find out what's going on. Maybe keep a diary and see if there is something significant that happens at a certain time of day or certain day.
It may be that he's just trying to get his way. Because you said that he gets upset if he can't do certain things, so it may be his way of having a temper tantrum, and maybe when he tells you he's had the 'worst day ever' he's just trying to get your sympathy to be able to do the thing he wants to do. Or it could just be one of those phases every child goes through. I don't know for sure, but that's a possibility. I would say that he is probably too young for depression, and definitely too young for the prescribed treatment these days. Just to be on the safe side, call your pediatrician and tell them what's going on, and they should be able to help you. Best of luck!
aww, that's really sad to hear! my little brother was kinda like that. i don't think he is depressed, i dont think depression has an age but he is probably just emotional. my brother was like that and now if you look at him funny u'd wish you were never even born! it could be a phase, don't worry. dont put him on medications or to a phsyciatrist, thats so bad the brain is such a fragile part of the body and medicine is all chemicals and he is soo young. you dont want to risk worse problems later on in life. just try to make him happy, when he is having a bad day ask why and tell him that it will be ok. if he hasnt always been like this it is probably just a phase.
Yes he could be having some depression but beware of the Dr.s that diagnosis and give medicine at the drop of a hat. They are diagnosisng 6 year olds with BiPolar and what 6 year old doesn't have mood swings. I feel very strongly that counselig will help more than medication unless the psychiatrist see's him several times before prescribing meds. Remember these meds are NOT approved by the FDA for use in children. You have said he has problems when he can't stay at papa's or his aunt. Sounds like a more stable home routine would help. My 7 year old grandaughtet can be the nicest girl in the world and have a 2 hour trantum because she can't have a piece of gum because it's all gone. We have talked alot with the teachers and have a counseling appt. for her on the 31st. The counselor specialzes in children and wants to see both parents seperately first. We have a major problem because dad is in denial and doesn't think she needs help. I hope you can find some good help. School counselors are great for making referrals and most school districts have a school psychologist that can get you on the right track.
