In layman's terms, what are ST Depressions? Thank you? In layman's terms...electrical activity of the heart is affected by the oxygen supply. Healthy, well oxygenated heart muscle cells have a certain electrical signature that can be seen on the ECG. ST depression is a form of deviation from that normal signature that denotes "ischemia" or decreased oxygenation of some heart muscle cells. It usually means there are some blockages in the heart arteries and some heart muscle is not getting enough oxygen...Hope that helps.. http://nccam.nih.gov/health/stjohnswort/... http://www.mihandbook.stanford.edu/gloss... ST describes a portion of the waveform in an electrocardiogram (ECG). In the ECG, the P wave indicates atrial depolarisation, the QRS complex indicates ventricular depolarisation and T wave indicates repolarisation. The ST segment describes the end of the QRS complex and the start of the T wave. ST depressions usually indicate heart muscle ischemia and may progress on to a full acute myocardial infarction which may be manifested as ST elevations and T inversions. In layman's terms - it's really bad. Usually indicative of impending heart attack. Do not wait - go straight to the hospital. |
