Do you think americans depend too much on drugs to deal with their depression?

Im rather curious to see what your opinon is. Im on meds myself for depression, but I could live my life without them. With my doctors consent I have to stay on them. I dont think a person should rely on drugs to deal with depression. Depression can be dealt with by talking to a trusted friend, and keeping your mind occupied. If you dont think about it, it wont dominate your life.

I think it all depends on the person. It seems like with a lot of people, it's just all in their heads...like some people will be feeling down for a day or two and then just automatically self-diagnose themselves as depressed and just put themselves into this state of mind that they really are miserable when they really don't have to be. But at the same time, I also realize that there are those who really do suffer from depression and meds can be necessary at times. So yeah, it all depends on the person.
According to Tom Cruise, anti-depressant drugs are evil. According to the rest of the people who are not insane, they are good.
I believe the mind can be a powerful force but the reason you aren't feeling depressed is because your anti-depressants are working. I believe with some really good counseling and therapy, you can eventually work your way off antidepressants. It depends on why you take them. Depression is an actual chemical imbalance which is corrected by medication. I would follow your doctors orders.
Is that you Tom Cruise??? I'm G's wife, I'm almost 50, and it took me 47 years to feel normal. Some people have depression because of post traumatic syndrome, some, its a chemical imbalance. alcohol, drugs, sex, and food didn't help. when the only answer was a second from pulling the trigger...antipressents saved my life. I'm a happy camper and can't wait for each day to start. and I thank God for carrying me thru it all...amen
In Short yes, i have read about other treatments on depression.
yes depression is all in your mind, its all about the individual, but some depression can be chronic i.e genetically based.
and one way to notice if someone has a genetic condition of depression is by looking at his past medical condition, Anxiety or panic attacks are a good sign.
The doctors worry by stopping your dose, it may cause a change as your body has become use to the drug, and they would like to either reduce the dose or stop it once the medication has ended.
I agree with you totally .... to many people rely on antidepressant when they just need counseling or guidance .... even a friend as you say.
But you can be assured that if the doctors feels that a patient doesn't need medication or the depression isn't chronic, then he/she may prescribe a placebo or request counseling ..... a placebo is just an inactive medication but the patient believes it active.
The results are amazing showing the a large percentage of recovery using a placebo.
so yes i totally agree with you, if the depression is not genetically based then it can be dealt with without medication.
i'm a depressant. i've tried for years to deal with my depression without meds. all i wound up doing was trying to kill myself three times. now i'm on meds and i am doing much better. the theory behind drugs for treatment of depression is that in the brain there are chemicals that reacting to other chemicals. in a person that is depressed you don't get this chemical reaction that is necessary for the brain to react normally. so these drugs that doctors give us help the chemicals to react the way they are supposed to. hope this hasn't confused you. GOD Bless you .
Drugs are awful
