Can I change my diet to help me with my depression?

What foods can I add to my diet that will promote good endorphines to put me in a better mood, also what could or would make it worse?

You can certainly change your diet to help depression. Eating unhealthily or taking part in emotional eating (eating when you're sad) can agitate already salient depressive symptoms. Avoid high calorie foods and avoid grease. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. There's no magic food for depression but a healthy diet can help you greatly.

The best thing you can do to help your depression aside from therapy is to take part in daily exercise. Make a commitment to 30-40 minutes of daily rigorous exercise. Exercise helps the brain to release serotonin, which is a neurotransmitter that serves as a mood regulator. Serotonin is actually the neurotransmitter targeted by many of the antidepressant medications on the market today. Studies have shown that regular exercise has similar effects as antidepressants. Be sure to consult with your therapist or doctor regarding any diet or exercise regimen you plan to engage in. Best of luck. Source(s): I'm a doctoral student in psychology.
Fatty foods, or foods high in grease can make you feel more sluggish and bloated. Believe it or not chocolate is very high in endorphines, and will actually make you feel happier. Coffee and teas will also stimulate the brain, and studies show that caffiene only becomes harmful if you drink over like ten cups of coffee a day. Other things that would help are spending more time outside (in the sunshine) and excercising. Those two can create more endorphines than foods can. I'm guessing your trying to find a way around using anti-depressants.

Magnesium, flax seed, and brazil nuts, I've beeen told will help depression. Also exercise and physical activities that you enjoy, like gardening for example will help. Also join a support group.
I've heard that multi vitamins can be very helpful for depression. In general, eating a healthy diet should help with depression. Do you hydrate enough? Do you do too much caffine?
Avoid fatty food and food with high carbohydrate. Eat whole grain food, whole wheat, bread, cereal. Eat lots of fish and avoid red meat. Avoid sugar. Sugar is really bad for depression.

Avoid coffee and may be you can try green tea. It has lots of antioxidants and has a calming effect.

Drink lots of water.

Eat multivitamin. St John's Wort medicine (can be purchased in a pharmacy) may help.

You may like to take doses of viamin B complex, zinc, vitamin C , fish oil (EPA and DHA).

Exercising moderately does help.

Try to get into the sunlight.

Avoid negative news. Try to find friends to talk with.

Whenever struck with a negative thought, try to switch to thinking about happy memories.

If it still does not work, you may need to see a psychiatrist to put you on medication such as Prozac. But such medication has come under fire in the last few years for having side effects.
