What are the sympyoms for depression? More than just temporary blue mood, the despondency of depression is unrelenting and overwhelming. Some people describe it as 鈥渓iving in a black hole鈥?or having a feeling of impending doom. They can't escape their unhappiness and despair. However, some people with depression don't feel depressed at all. Rather than sad, they feel lifeless and empty. In this apathetic state, they are unable to experience pleasure. Even when participating in activities they used to enjoy, they feel as if they're just 鈥済oing through the motions.鈥? For a more complete look at the signs of depression, see the chart below. The symptoms vary from person to person, and they may wax and wane in severity over time. Depression Symptoms Depressed mood Feeling hopeless, sad, discouraged, or empty. Loss of interest or pleasure Inability to experience pleasure. Nothing seems to interest you anymore, including former hobbies, social activities, and sex. Appetite or weight changes Significant weight loss or weight gain鈥攁 change of more than 5% of body weight in a month. Sleep changes Insomnia or oversleeping (also known as hypersomnia). Psychomotor agitation or retardation 鈥淜eyed up,鈥?unable to sit still, anxious, restless or sluggish, slow speech and body movements, lack of responsiveness. Fatigue or loss of energy Physically drained. Even small tasks are exhausting. Can't do things as quickly as you used to. Self-loathing Strong feelings of worthlessness or guilt. Harsh criticism of perceived faults and mistakes. Concentration problems Inability to focus. Difficulty making decisions. Can鈥檛 鈥渢hink straight.鈥?Memory problems. Irritability Grouchy, easily annoyed, and frustrated by little things. Angry outbursts. Aches and pains Depression can cause or exacerbate many physical symptoms, including headaches, backaches, diarrhea or constipation, abdominal pain, and aching joints. People suffering from depression often show distorted thinking. Everything looks bleak to them, and they hold extremely negative views about themselves, their situation, and the future. Trapped in their pessimism, they obsess over their problems and blow them out of proportion. Feeling hopeless and helpless, they may even start to see suicide as their only way out. Giving up your wordly possessions, sleeping all of the time, not showering or caring about your appearance, talking about suicide or attempting suicide. My daughter suffers from severe depression one other thing she does is cut herself. She has been seeing a counselor and doctor for meds for over 3 1/2 yrs now. If you are depressed please talk to someone, reach out for help. It isn't something that most people can do on their own. It has been a rough time for us but we just keep on holding onto her and letting her know that we are there for support. If you know someone that you think is depressed then whatever you do don't give up on him or her. Be there as a constant. well Ashley, I can only tell you from my own experience but you feel angry and dont know why, helpless, hopeless ,feel like crying all the time and have no energy to do anything . you avoid people because "they wouldn't understand". if you think you are depressed, they is no reason to suffer needlessly. make an appointment with a doctor asap and when you go ,be sure to be honest about how you really feel. my doctor saved me from a deep depression which i wasnt aware i had at the time but looking back now i realize i must have been depressed since i was 11 years old when my father took his life. there is help and hope . go get it girl , you deserve to feel like a new person. |
