Is there a link between IQ and depression?

Do people with higher/lower IQ's get depression or is it a random thing? Ive known several highly intelligent people who are very prone to depression.

:) thanks

it depends if you are refereing to a genetically 'caused' depression or a depression that is a result of a significant event - ie - death in the family, loss of job and the like.
Depression can be very complex. So can IQ! People with higher IQ would think more about their depression and analyse it and probably get more depressed befroe seeking help. Alcohol/drug abuse or addictions and denial would probably be significant also. People with lower IQ's may just ride with it?!!
Everyone is different.
I work with autistic kids and their levels of anxiety correlate with their disposition to depression due the structure of their brain..I am talking about lower functioning autistic children - IQ under 70, non-verbal, sensory needs very high...
but then, some 'gifted' people can also suffer depression too.
My IQ is 142 and I have been on anti-depressants for bipolar and anxiety disorder for 8 years - am now 35...
I don't think IQ really has much influence when it comes down to the fine details...
Maybe you can research it and solve it for the world???!!! LOL
The smarter you are, the more likely you are to see just how screwed up the world is...

And thats depressing.
i dont think there is a relationship btn those 2!a person with low or high IQ can get depressed.
as in "ignorance is bliss"?
I don't think that would be a correlation; but maybe a more intelligent person is more likely to seek treatment.
Mental illness does not discriminate. Educated, uneducated, rich, poor. It does not have a preference. It can happen to anyone at any time.
It strikes all walks of life. It is particularly prevalent in high stress situations, like graduate school, abusive families, the unemployed, the oppressed.
there is a DEFINITE relationship between IQ and depression. people with higher IQ's tend to feel disconnected from society, and have a harder time finding people in life that they can consider "equals", the higher the iq, the harder it is to connect with people, and have "intelligent conversation", and the more alone you feel.

"Children develop along four streams: intellectual, physical, emotional (psychological) and social. In classrooms, the smartest kids tend to be left out of more activities by other children than they are included in. They are "odd," they are the geeks, they are social outsiders. In other words, they do not develop socially as well as they may develop intellectually or even physically where opportunities may exist for more progress."

Happiness in intelligent people is the rarest thing I know.
