Is lamictal effective in treating depression?

Lamictal is used sometimes to treat bipolar disorder and help stabilize your mood. When my psychiatrist tried me on it I became severely depressed and cried all the time; however, it may help you. Make sure you discuss it with your doctor. Source(s): self, MSW
There is (some) evidence to suggest that it has merit as a mood stabilizer. However, as a treatment for depression alone, I'd skip it and go with something proven (e.g., SSRIs, SSNRIs, etc). At best, it would be an off-label script. At worst, it could delay your start of an anti-dep that could actually work for you.

In addition, some Lamictal users have had a VERY serious rash reaction to this medication which has (sadly, quite literally) cost them their lives.

it works best in people who are bipolar.
Yes, Lamictal, anticonvulsant, is prooven working for depression and mood swings. I can tell you from my experience. If the SSRI and SSNRI's do not wor for you, it is worth to try it in combination with a small dosage of SSRI, or some mood stabilizer like Lithium. You might even get an antidepresant result from small dosage of Lamictal. The drug does not have that much side effects besides rash so you have to watch yourself closely. Good Luck!
