Does depression lead to decline in I.Q. of a person?Do an antidepressants cause loss of memory ,confusion? |
i have been taking antidepressants for more than a year It will help to know why you are taking anti-depressants. Personally I do not agree with Jack.Spade for the plain reason that some people have endemic depression (genetics involved) and it will be like telling a diabetic to stop taking his/her medication. In some instances, it is life-threatening if people do not take medication. Depression runs in my family so I know. No, depression does not lead to a decline in IQ but if left untreated for years the constant stress can affect your brain at a later stage. Therefore, it is necessary to handle it now. Yes, anti-depressants can affect memory, confusion but depression also does that. Better speak to your psychiatrist about going onto another anti-depressant or what to do about the side-effects. depression doesnt affect your IQ, however being depressed can cause you to respond more slowly. simply because your apathetic. i was on anti depressants for 9 years and my suggestion to you is get off them. its best to learn to deal with your depression on your own. a few months after i quit them i started feeling better, simply because i took the initiative to face my life head on Depression does not damage IQ. Neither do antidepressants, as in, if you go off them, your intellect will return to normal. But they can cloud your mind, and make you not perform as well, certainly. I don't agree with Jack Spade in his answer at all, but didn't give him a negative rating because he was being respectful. I have lived with depression, anxiety, and PTSD for quite some time now and I am in remission at the present time. I also feel qualified to answer the question because I have a 180 IQ and can focus on a task like a laser beam. But during a particularly hard time in 2003-2004, I started to lose my memory and having trouble talking. It was later discovered that my problem was depression and that that was causing my memory loss among other things. I think that to say that antidepressants can cause or aggravate memory loss and cognitive problems is analogous to saying that being on an antidepressant can cause suicidal tendencies in another. I see both circumstances as being a consequence of depression more than a side effect of medication(s). I still continue to take AD's and probably will for the rest of my life. But I use a combination of medication and therapy to improve my self confidence. But on a similar note, to tell a depressed person to get off of the AD's is analogous to telling a diabetic to get off of pills or insulin and control his diabetes through diet and exercise alone. Medication should never be used as a main tool against depression, but should be used in conjunction with therapy, diet, supplements, etc. to make a full and complete recovery. Personal experience. Actually, there are scientific studies that have shown that people who are depressed are more likely to develop Alzhemier's and dementia later in life. |
