Should you get help for social anxiety and depression? |
When I moved I saw a new doctor and told her how difficult I was finding things to the point that I cannot get a job. I have had the problems for 11 years and she basically told me to get over it. I felt like saying if it was that easy, why have I suffered for so long?! I came away feeling lost and like I was being pathetic, surely there should be some help around? I'm not on benefits but really struggling but I feel like when I try and get help I get the door slammed in my face. I feel that only recently depression has been recognised as a mental illness but social anxiety isn't....I guess it's because people think 'well everyone gets nerves'....it's a hard bridge to cross when everyone thinks like that, surely if something afects your life so much it should be taken seriously? First of all, you should not see that doctor who told you to get over it. She is not a good doctor, has no proper bedside manner and is probably like that outside of her practice. Social anxiety IS a recognized anxiety disorder, of which there are several. You must get help. It won't suddenly disappear. Cognitive behavioral therapy as well as medication together can be very effective. You will probably be gradually exposed to various anxiety-provoking situations, but by doing so, you gradually lose your fear. It's ironic that to get well, you need to do the things that have made you 'unwell' in the first place. When you face the problems, bit by bit, you begin to squash the fears to the point that you can start to function properly again. It will take effort and won't be easy. Can it be done? You bet! You can do this, so stay positive and focus on your goals. Good luck! Source(s): http://www.panic-and-agoraphobia.com/soc... http://www.panic-and-agoraphobia.com/soc... I am not a doctor or no where close to one. There is anxiety disorders so I can't imagine "social" anxiety not being something tied to that. There does come a time that one just has to take responsibility and make a change; not placing blame on something along the way. HOWEVER, you need to try to talk with a psychiatrist about what you have been going through. Keep in mind that it may take a few different doctors in order to find the right "fit" for you. I personally don't believe one doctor fits all. Like I said, I am no way a doctor; however, with the right counseling (which everyone can use time to time regardless) and maybe a medication to help with the anxiety....that may help you. Good luck with this, I imagine that it is frustrating; hopefully you can kick this in the butt soon! (remember too, this will take time; it definitely won't happen overnight) If you want to TRULY work on yourself given the right tools YOU'LL DO IT! sense See depression, and social anxiety, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris... on pages 2, and 9. If the social anxiety and depression are severe enough to cause functional impairment and distress then yes you should get treatment. For me Zoloft helped with both my social anxiety disorder and depression. therapist |
