Diabetes and insulin? |
what are the advantages to dieabetics of having slow acting insulin and why must they also have fast acting insulin? What a lot of people don't understand is that humans need insulin 24/7, even when we're sleeping or not eating for hours. The long-acting insulin covers those dormant and non-eating times, just giving a time-released low dose of insulin over the course of 12-24 hours. The fast -acting insulin covers meals and snacks and is taken several times throughout the day, based on how much carb is ingested. If a diabetic is on an insulin pump like me, only fast-acting insulin is used, and just a tiny drop of insulin is delivered every 2-3 minutes to cover the dormant periods, then I dial in my carb to get the right amount of insulin for snacks and mealtimes. It's great! Dingding is 100% correct. I just wanted to add, that your liver stores extra sugar to release on a regular basis. The slow release of sugar is beneficial to a non-diabetic ... but a type 1 diabetic will need the long acting insulin to cover it. |
