Dog Diabetes?

My neghibors dog of 6 years has diabetes. He has had it for probally around 8 months. And he is as skinny as a bone, he eats alot, drinks alot, and has to go to the bathroom every 15 minutes. They give him insulin, as many units as the vet told them to give him. But the dog has not gained any weight.

This is a picture of the dog, his name is Trooper.

Can you give me any suggestions on how to help? They put enzymes in his food, which is about three cups dry and one can of wet. Is there any way to make him gain weight without changing vets?

Thank you.

They only feed him dog food. But he steals human food. Such as pizza, and cookies, and will eat anything, packaging and all.

My vet currently carries a food that he recommends for his diabetes patients. It is called Evo. www.evopet.com.
It is grain free and I had already started feeding it to my cancer dog. I feed it to all of my dogs now. They have delicious grain free treats as well. Worth a shot. It can be purchased online if no one in the area carries it.
Also, it sounds like the owners are diligent in doing everything they can. They may want to consider taking Trooper to a vet school or a board certified specialist in internal medicine. That way, it's not as if you are switching vets, because you actually need a referral from your current vet to see one of these specialists.
For any of my dogs' serious problems, my vet has always referred and worked very closely with LSU's School of Veterinary Medicine. Some of the best specialists work at vet schools.

Sadly, the dog is losing weight because it's blood sugar level is out of control. Put simply, the reason the dog is losing weight is because the cells of the dog can't utilise the sugar (glucose) in the bloodstream so, in effect, the dog is 'starving'. To combat this the dogs cells are utilising what food they can find elsewhere. It does this by using muscle and fat reserves.

The only way this is going to be rectified is by the vet keeping an eye on the dog's blood sugar levels and adjusting the insulin dosage accordingly.

Extra food is not really going to help matters as when this gets broken down into simple sugars ... glucose ... it is not being used. It's also doubtful that adding enzymes is going to help either, I'm sorry to say.

he might need more insulin

did you feed him lunch meats?
